STAFF PHOTOS BY WAYNE GAYLORO AND FEATURES BV JOE OEHN Coach Bill Hutchinson faces a rebuilding year for his cross country team at MeHenry this fall. "A tird of last year's team was lost to Johnsburg high," he explained, "so we are in the process of rebuilding ." Most notably missing from last year's team however, is Mike Burman. Burma n was the conference champion a year ago, and qualified for the state tournament Last year, the MeHenry team finished with a record of 9 and 6 in dual meets They were third in the county on the varsity and frosh-soph levels arid fourth in the county on the freshman level. "But losing all the boys we did," the veteran coach added, "is going to make it hard to equal last year's record." The new feature of this year's cross country team, is the addition of girls to the squad "For the first time in the history of the school, we have a girl's cross country team and it will compete against the other teams on our schedule with girls teams," said Hutchinson There are three girls on the team this year Senior Dana Dornbush. Junior Carrie Mortell and freshman Anne Scully are the history making girls on the squad In their first meet, Carrie and Anne ran against Schaumburg high and tcxik third and fourth respectively Only two letterman return to anchor the varsity squad this year Senior Dave Byron, who is a 4-year veteran of the team, and Senior Pat Teuber return for their last year of competition "Dave Peterson is a senior out for his first year and running well," according to Hutchinson "Junior Randy Wright could be our best runner this year." said Hutchinson, "and Gerry Baczkowski is aiso running very well as is Mark Scheib." The lack of depth on the upper level will hurt the team's chances. "It 's hard to get boys to go out for the team when they are juniors an seniors." said the coach. "You have to get them to go out when they are freshman and sophomores so that they will become dedicated " Sophomore Don Mitacek heads the list of underclassman. "Don is experienced and will continue to gain experience this year which will help when he is an upperclassman," said Hutchinson. Other sophomores include Ray Bouray, Victor Champney, Pat Haderly, Dana Scheib and Mark Popelka "Our freshman team is very good," noted Hutchinson. "Scott Farns, Gordon Bouray, Gary Clark, Wade Cepulis and Steve Haines are all good runners and give us excellent depth." Haines won the junior high school state championship in the 880-yard run last spring "Alan Kopp and Doug Maris are two other freshman who help to increase the depth of the squad," said Hutchinson. The season got underway Sept 2 against Libertyville The team is entered in several Invitational meets, including the Maine West Invitational Sept 9, the Wauconda Invitational Sept 16, the Grant-Crystal I.ake Central Invitational Sept 30. and the Peoria Invitational Oct 7 The county meet is seheduledfor Oct. 14 at MeHenry and the conference meet is Oct. 21 at Cary The state district qualifying meet is Oct 28 New Coach Wants To Turn \ Girls Volleyball Around In past seasons, girls volleyball has not had a rough time First year coach Pam Schaefer wants to turn things around "It has been rough in the past for girls on the team," she said. "They just haven't been able to win many games." But the attitude of this year's team is still good "I've been very impressed with the attitude of the girls at practice thus far," said Ms Schaeffer Forty-five girls turned out for the first day of practice Sept 5, and the new coach will have to trim the roster to about 36 before the first games on Sept 19 against Antioch "We will probably keep three teams with 12 girls on each team," she said "We will play varsity, junior varsity, and have a freshman team " "The most important thing we want to accomplish this year is to teach and improve the individual skills of each girl on the team," said the coach. "From there, we will be able to win a few games and begin to upgrade the program," she added Diane Peterson is the only returning senior on the team, which features several players with very good potential according to Schaeffer Sharon Schau, a junior who is playing for her third year will see plenty of action, as will Pam West, a freshman who will play on the varsity level. "Pam is a small girl," according to Coach Schaeffer, "but she is an excellent player who can jump well." Other players who Schaeffer hopes will continue to improve and help the team are juniors Peggy McGee, Mary Foley and Julie Smith, and sophomores, Kim Coleman. Knsta Kaefer and Peggy Freund "We lost a couple of girls who started on last year's team, because they transferred to Johnsburg, so we don't have a lot of experience," Schaeffer explained The new coach looks at MeHenry s entrance into the new Fox Valley Conference as a blessing for the Volleyball team "The teams will all be better balanced, and we will lie able to be more competitive with the schools in the Fox Valley," she said "Volleyball has been down at MeHenry for a long time," she added "We want to get it on the right track, upgrade the program, and teach good, fundamental, individual skills to the girls."
