"I'm very optimistic," she said "This year's team should be very good The girls are very experienced " Heading the list of returning players is senior Patti Thelen from Johnsburg. "Patti is in her fourth year as a varsity player," said the coach, "and the best player on the team." Three other girls expected to start on the varsity team are Joy Spengel and Rene DeRosier from McHenrv and Nancy Hartmann from Wonder l^ake Spengel and Hartmann are seniors and DeRosier is a junior "Joy and Nancy started on the varsity last year and Rene lettered her first two years on the team." said the first year coach Other seniors on the team include Kathy Knox from McHenrv and Lori Vogt from Wonder Lake. Juniors from McHenry are Darlene Hughes. Trudy Koch. Debbie Mauer, and Cathy Thompson There are 33 girls on the team and they will make up a varsity and frosh- soph team "There is high interest in girls .volleyball at Marian," Mrs Stoner explained. "The program is really on the rise " The program will apparently continue to improve. as the underclassmen appear to be talented. A new coach Mary Stoner greeted a volleyball team at Marian that returned intact from last year, except for one player. Last year's team finished third in the conference, and "The sophomores and freshmen on the team have very advanced skills for underclassmen," according to Stoner. "They will be very good the next few years." The team also has a very good attitude according to Stoner which will be a good help "This team should win the districts," she said "And it has a good chance of winning the conference, because everyone is back." with all the players from that team returning, there is reason for optimism on the varsity level. "This year's team should be very good. It is very experienced," said Stoner. Tennis Coach Hopes For Improvement Marian girl's tennis coach Cindy Smith, in her second year, hopes that her team can improve this year as much as it did last • • I^ast year, the team improved 20 [»ereent over the previous year," she said, "and I hope to see and slightly t>etter improvement this year." There are 18 girls on the team, who will comprise a varsity and junior varsity team, with only a varsity team competing in conference "We lost a good group of seniors from last year's team," said Ms Smith, "but we still have five players returning from last year s team " Senior Sue Albinger returns and will play number one singles Heather Newkirk, Karen Truckenbord irom McHenry and Karen Dusthimer from Wonder Lake,' will round out the varsity singles team Sue Wilcoski from Richmond and Michele Malone from McHenry, both seniors, will team up to comprise the number one doubles team. Junior Collette Nuelle and Ellen Miller, a freshman from McHenry, will be the number two doubles team. Tracy Harding, junior, and Gail N'eussbaum, a senior, will be the number three team "The attitude of the team is improving," said Ms. Smith, and the new uniforms the team got really helped " "We are teaching the girls a game of skill as well as etiquette," the coach explained.
