HOURS: MON.-THURS. 9 •. 5 FRI. 9-S, SAT. 9-3 £§££(=» Cross Country Hopes To Improve Marian's cross country team had a banner year in 1977. They were third in their conference, third in the county, second in the state districts, fifth in the state sectional tournament and ninth in the state. And what are the team's goals for this year? "We are hoping for big things/' said coach Hans Roukus. "We want to improve on last year's state finish, and challenge for the conference and county titles." And the team has the talent needed to realize the goals. Senior Darryl May from Johnsburg is the number one runner on the squad. I^ast year, he was second in the conference, third in the county, district and sectional meets and topped an outstanding individual season by placing ninth in the state. "We expect big things from Darryl," said Roukus. "He has an outside shot at the state title." Junior Mike Davis, another Marian harrier from Johnsburg, is the number two runner on the team. Last year, Davis won the frosh-soph conference title, took second in the county frosh-soph race, and finished fifty-second in the state. "Davis is a solid number two man," according to Roukus "He has been running right behind Darryl all fall." Sophomore Paul Sandail from Spring Grove is the number three man on the team. As a freshman last year, Sandail finished third in the frosh-soph county meet, second in the frosh-soph conference meet, and fifty-fifth in the state. The number four man will be Mike Eisele, a sophomore transfer from McHenry. "Sandail and Eisele have been running right behind Davis," said the veteran cross country mentor. "They give us strong three, four runners. We are counting on big things from both of them." Jesse Garcia, a senior, and Mike DiPirro, a junior, are bot^experienced runners. "Both Garcia and DiPirro were on the state team last year and that gives us added depth and experience," said Roukus. Rounding out the varsity squad are Bob Lister from Wonder Lake and John West. Both will be battling for the seventh spot on the team. "We are really shooting for the meets at the end of the year," said Roukus. "If the boys are running well at the end of the season," he explained, "we feel we will have a shot at the county, conference and an outside shot at the state title."
