Randy will write a column to appear each Wednesday, also covering athletic contests. Scott covered the varsity football game at Grayslake and appears well able to handle his assignments. Found quite a stack of reports on our desk Monday morning, but finally waded through it in time to go home for a little nourishment. We don't refer to it as the sports page any longer. It is now the sports section. Old Timers of county league baseball played golf Sunday at the Hunter Country Club in Richmond, then sat down to sink the choppers into prime rib Conversation and good fellowship permeated the room Sorry to say there wasn't the large crowd expected. Harry and Grace Stilling toured down from Lake Mills, Wis. to enjoy the day. Harry was a hustling player for the Shamrocks. If memory is correct, Grace was the official score keeper Ted Pitzen and Lorraine, their son John and a lovely young lady enjoyed par ticipating in the good time. Ted was one of the Old Time Tigers in a day when the Tigers were hard to tame This could be a big event if more people got into the act and started promoting earlier next year Sonny Katzenberg has been carrying the load, but will welcome more help next year. Elroy Fitzgerald was there with a keen memory of games most of us have long since forgotten Who's that knocking at our door? When we went to find out, there stood two fellows (let's say on the husky side > holding large cardboard signs covering their faces. When they lowered the cards, we saw it was "Biff" Meyer holding the one with the printed words "Cub Fans Have Come Out of The Bushes". j' • i i Another former McHenryite, Donald Hayes, had a "Go-Go White Sox" greeting. We let him come in! Their visit was all too short. Hope they will come again -- SOON SHOPPING - If the -1-- ' ham, snooty PING - e pigs knew the price of they would really be Often think it would be better not to listen to weather reports. They tell us that, after a hot September, we can expect a long, hard winter. Weathermen. Who needs them? The Chicago Bears are the talk of the sports world after beating the Detroit Lions last Sunday by a score of 19-0. The acquistion of Golden Richards has given the Bears a big boost. They are going to win more games with him than without him SPLASHED! Man, did I get splashed (not smashed). Waiting to make a left turn from Richmond Road onto Broad St., the car and I both got a bath with murky water. There were only two vehicles to wait for, but the driver pulled onto the shoulder and hit a big puddle My right window was down so the inside of the car and the outside of me got soaked While the splasher drove merrily down the street, I tried to recover from the shock. That driver got my blessing Want to remind you that the Warrior football game this week at Cary will be played Saturday afternoon Sweeps Johnsburg Tavern Old Bridge Wins 16-Inch Title The Old Bridge softball club defeated Johnsburg Tavern 7-6 Tuesday night to win the McHenry Men's 16-inch league title The win gave the Bridge a three game sweep in the best of ifive series i A two-out, two-run homerun Jay Tom Les in the bottom of the final inning won the game for ithe Bridge It was the second Iplayoff championship in the jast three years • The winners become the first !team to win the 12-inch league FORMAL WEAR RENTALS for ALL OCCASIONS alt SStowt 121 4 Y Gr«*n Si.. MrHenn championship and the 16-inch league championship in McHenry in the same season This is the first time in many seasons that Johnsburg tavern (formerly Hettermann's) did not win either the league or playoff championship Fox Hole won the league, with Johnsburg finishing in fourth place Last year. Hettermann's won the league and playoff championships Johnsburg took an early 2-0 lead in the first inning, scoring both runs after two were out Wayne Hiller singled. Myron Bentz reached on an error, and Don Bentz doubled both run ners home In the second, the Bridge tied the score Rick Wakitsch. Ron Miller and Steve Kohrer all singled, with Wakitsch and Miller scoring Johnsburg recaptured the lead in the third inning The big blow was a 2 run homerun by Don Bentz The Bridge scored once in the fourth, after Greg Freund reached on an error Ron Miller's second hit of the game sent Freund to third and a sacrifice flyball by Steve Rohrer scored Freund Three straight hits in the fifth inning tied the score for the softball club Doug Freund, Les and Joe Dehn all singled, with Freund scoring on Dehn's hit and Les moving to second He scored on a fly out by Rick Wakitsch as Johnsburg had trouble with the relay throw In the top of the sixth, Johnsburg regained the lead. Don Bentz. who played perhaps his finest game of the season offensively and defensively, reached on an error and ad vanced to second on a single by Bill Oeffling Two fly outs later. Bentz had scored and John sburg had a slim one run lead Old Bridge went three up, three down in the bottom of the sixth, and Johnsburg didn't score in the top of the seventh In the bottom of the final inning, the first two batters for Old Bridge made out, and it appeared that Johnsburg had the game wrapped out Doug Freund then reached on an error and the Bridge hopes were still alive Les then followed with a line drive toward right center The ball landed in front of the diving centerfielder of John sburg and skipped past him for a homerun, and Old Bridge had the championship. 7-6 They had defeated Johnsburg in a doubleheader last Thur sday, Sept. 14. and the three wins gave them a sweep of the best of five series Les added a single and a run scored to his homerun to pace the Bridge. Miller added two hits, an RBI and one run scored Don Bentz paced Johnsburg with two hits, two runs scored and 4 RBI's, including a two- run homer Wayne Hiller added two hits and a run scored Dining At Its Best.... The Trojans have split their first two games this season in non-conference play defeating Wauconda 15 to 14, and losing to Lake Zurich 17 to 13. Coach Garv Steinbach in his second season is relying on his defense to carry him through the season. Defensive ends Al Fledier and Randy Schroeder will anchor the five man line used by the Trojans Key to Steinbach s defense is his set of linebackers, Jack Graves and Brian Kierna, two returning lettermen at the linebacker position Junior quarterback Eric Zoph will be the field general, and his favorite target on the receiving end of his passes is Art Aevermann, who was all- conference last season. The Warriors, smarting from two losses in pre-conference play, will be out to get the show on the road. In losing to Grant last Friday night, there was much improvement on the part of the Warriors from the previous weekend However, they must cut down on their mistakes, and will have to get better blocking from the line The Warrior passing game was mighty fine, however, they must keep the interceptions down to a minimum or better yet. no interceptions The sophs get under way at 12 noon and the varsity will follow at 2:00 p m MCHS Golfers Defeat Crystal Lake, Woodstock DAILY DINNER SPECIALS SERVED 5 P.M.
