McHenry, II 60050 A deduction of one month from the expiration ol a subscription will be made where a change of address is provided through the Post Office Department A current outbreak of polio in the Netherlands emphasizes the importance of im munization in order to avoid a similar occurrence in the United States Nearly 100 cases of polio have occurred in an area of south Holland where the number of immunized children is very small The victims range in age from three weeks to 41 years, all but six of them are under 27 years old There has been one death so far - a three-month- old infant More than seventy of the polio victims in the Netherlands have developed paralysis All the others have meningitis The Netherlands may seem like a remote place, far from Illinois But several cases of polio have been reported ih Canada And all of these vic tims have had recent contact - in Canada - with residents of the south Holland area where the outbreak is occurring. If the polio immunization level of Illinois children con tinues to decline, the same thing could happen here. One reason polio im munization levels are down in Illinois is that today's young parents do not remember the polio epidemics of the 30's, 40's. and 50's When polio vaccine became available in the early 60s, parents rushed to have their children immunized They remembered too well the fear of this crippling disease - they had lived with it all their lives, and were eager to safeguard their children from the devastating effects of polio. The vaccine was effective, and, as nearly all children received it. cases of polio became few and far between Unfortunately, this led many people to believe that this dreaded disease had been eradicated, and they became lax about immunization Today, we have a generation of young parents who never experienced the permeating terror that penetrated each home when one child in the neighborhood was said to have polio Today's young parents have not had to live with the sights of children in iron lungs or swimming pools boarded up because of a polio outbreak To them, polio seems as remote as scarlet fever. Bubonic plague and other diseases which formerly extracted their massive tolls But polio has not been eradicated It is still with us, and any child who is not fully immunized against it, is susceptible The Dutch and Canadian cases are awful evidence of this fact 2p To save space when freezing cut-up poultry, freeze only fleshy pieces. Cook the bony pieces, such as wings and backs, for immediate use or store as cooked meat picked off the bone.
