Sports Ink Day9* PAGE 7 - PLAIN DEALER WEDN ESDAY. SEPTEMBER 27,1»78 V;tf by Rmndy Swikle Mor« than 400 persons applied for teaching position! at the new Johnsburg high school, according to Principal Bill Hayes. Many of those applicants also applied for coaching assignments. "In addition to knowing the sport and knowing how to coach the sport, each candidate had to be sensitive to people," said Hayes. "A coach may produce a winning team, but that doesn't mean he is a good coach in teaching what high school sports should he about." Hayes says he is very pleased with the coaches hired to implement the Johnsburg athletic program. Johnsburg District 12 superintendent Dr. Duane Andreas is also impressed with the credentials of the high school coaches. "We managed to findsome excellent people," he says. A profile of he Skyhawk football staff seems to support the administrators' opinions. Mike Heimerdinger, head coach of the varisty team, comes to Johnsburg from neighboring Grant high school in Fox Lake. He taught at Grant and served on the school's coaching staff for the past three years. Heimerdinger graduated from DeKalb high school in 1070 and went to Eastern Illinois university on a football scholarship. Finding more success in playing baseball, he dropped football after his freshman year. The versatile athlete played center field and helped the Eastern Panthers reach third place in the college World feries The next year he was named "Most Valuable Playefr." f Heimerdinger s father is athletic director at DeKalb high school. Don March, assistant varsity coach and defense coordinator, went to Illinois college with a football-wrestling-track scholarship. He graduated in 1973 after being named "All Conference" in wrestling. Prior to accepting a position at Johnsburg, March taught in Shelbyville, 111., and served as assistant varsity football coach, head wrestling coach, and head track coach. March teaches English at Johnsubrg Junior high. Roger Ludwig is a name familiar to most local sports fans as the athlete from McHenry high school who received the rare honor of being named "All-State" in two different sports: football and basketball. Now Ludwig returns to the community in the role of a coach. His fall coaching assignment is head mentor of the sophomore football squad. Following graduation from McHenry high school, Ludwig attended Olney Junior college and Elmhurst college, where he was a four-year letterman in basketball. He was nominated for "Who's WhoM fa college and later served as assistant baseball coach at his Elmhurst alma mater. His father, Ken Ludwig, is varsity basketball coach at McHenry high school. Botj Tessier, assistant sophomore coach, lettered in cross country, at Sycamore high school in Illinois. A year after he graduated from high school, Tessier and a friend left to find Work in Alaska. He was hired to do geophysical work for Division of Texas Instruments, Geophysical Services, Inc. After his Alaskan experience, he spent three years in the army, two of which were with an atomic demolitions unit in Germany. Tessier also studied karate for two and one-half years and gained expertise in physical conditioning. He graduated from Northern Illinois university in 1976. Bob Schmitt is coach of the freshman football team. He graduated from Marian high school in 1963, lettering in football. Upon receiving a diploma from Parsons college in Fairfield, Iowa, Schmitt was employed by the Quincy School district. There he taught and served as basketball and football coach at the eighth grade and freshman levels. Jim Meyers is another local man who returns to his home community with the opening of Johnsburg high. Meyers, who is Johnsburg's athletic director, has an additional fall assignment as assistant freshman coach. Meyers graduated from McHenry high school in 1965. He lettered three years in baseball and was named "Most Valuable Player" and "All Conference". At Western Illinois university, he was on the conference championship baseball team and played with Rick Rueschel, now of th#CI|ie»go Cuba pitching staff. Miffes is an avid Softball player and has been on six state championship teams. Three times he was named to the 16-inch A.S.A. All-American team. Twice his team won second place in the national championships. Meyers returns to Johnsburg from Crown high school in Dundee, where he served as the school's athletic director. OUT OF THE INKWELL: "The Hononegah players were good sportsmen," said Johnsburg's amiable quarterback Mike Behan after his team was crushed by the Indians Saturday. "They helped me get back up several times." After a quick moment of reflection: "But I helped some of them get up too," he added with a smile... ...Each week the varsity football coaches name three top players. Already one athlete has received the recognition twice. Last week center Doug Free was named for his outstanding performance on offense against Grayslake. This week he was recognized for his specialty work. Others honored last week were Bruce Ambrose on Defense and Scott Young as specialty. This week John Olsson was named defensive player of the week, and Rich Backs was offensive player of the week... ...There was no referee to call "delay of practice", but that's what it was when Skyhawk sophomores had to search a local soybean patch for a football hurled by quarterback Randy Wakitsch that eluded the hands of a receiver. Because Johnsburg's football field is not yet ready for use, the Skyhawks have been holding their practice sessions on the Raymond Novotny farm on Wilmet road. One way to tell the difference between a farm boy and a city dude is by the time it takes to harvest a football from a ' soybean patch. Marian Beats Johnsburg And Rosary In Tennis Warriors Beat Cory-Grove By Dick Rabbit The McHenry High Warriors opened the Fox Valley Con ference play in fine ^yle defeating Cary Grove 15 to 8 last Saturday afternoon at Cary. It was also a milestone in the coaching career of Bill Day as the veteran mentor of the Warriors won his 100th victory of his coaching career. The ultimate goal of all high school coaches is that win that will give them 100th of their career, and on Saturday the Warriors did just that for their popular coach. It was bv no means an easy task as the Warriors had to come from behind to grab the victory. Jeff Vickery brought back the opening kickoff to the Warrior 16 yd line. Mark Vogt. senior fullback and the workhorse of the Warrior of fense, carried three times for the first down. Then the hard running back broke off tackle, shook off some tackles, and raced 57 yds. to the Trojan 20, as he was tripped up by a Cary defender in a desperation tackle. With less than a minute remaining the Warriors simply ran out the clock for their f irst win of the season, and their f irst victory in the Fox Valley It was a well-deserved win for the Warriors. They completely dominated the first half If they could have avoided a few mistakes in the opening half , they could have easi ly led by three touchdowns at the intermission.
