I KXtsKZe - PLAINDEALEK - FRIDAY, OCTOBER 6.1978 THE CLOUDY ISSUE OF NICARAGUA 11% KOWI.lt KKA<;\\ 1 let ween them, the Somozas - Anastasio. his brother, and l>efore that their father - have head the government of Nicaragua for more than forty years Is that too long9 It is, according to some U.S. news media and at least one prominent U.S. senator who is long on self righteousness and short on the facts Until the last few days when Nicaraguan troops cleaned out the remaining rebel strongholds, we were treated to daily proclamations * by headline writers and television news readers about the im pending demise of the Somoza government Everyone was against it they said It was tyrannical and tolerated no opposition We must cease all aid to Nicaragua until the "dictator" Somoza had stepped down, to be replaced by a new government, presumably sent from heaven. Then, democracy would flourish The U.S. Senate even got into the act by voting to cut off development aid. much of it agricultural This gave Sen Frank Church (D-Idaho), who is expected to become chair man of the Foreign Relations committee next year, a chance to enjoy some pontificating "The question is not whether Somoza falls, but when." he said "The longer Somoza resists the will of his people and uses his armed guard to quell resistance, the more likely it is that another Castro-type revolutionary government will eventually emerge." How's that' ' Somoza is the elected president of the country and "his armed guard" hap pens to be the National Guard, the country's army One thing armies do is put down rebellions As for Sen Church's notion that Somozas resignation would forestall a "Castro type revolutionary government" the hardcore of the late rebellion was formed by Sandinistas, armed Marxist revolutionaries widely believed to be supplied by Castro's Cuba Bands of restless youths joined in. giving the rebellion an air of widespread popularity. One is reminded of the New York Times headline that ran just before the fall of Cam bodia "Indochina Without Americans: Life Will be Better for Most." One thing about folks who want to remake the rest of the world in their own image: they can't resist meddling in other people's affairs Sen Church 'said the U.S. should join with other nations in the area to seek a "moderate govern ment" in Nicaragua Over at the White House Mr Carter and his national security adviser. Zbigniew Brzezinski said the U.S. was attempting to "Mediate" the dispute through contacts with Nicaragua's, "friends and neighbors ' Apparently none of them has read the charter of the Organization of American States <ot which we are a member < which says. "No state or group of states has the right to intervene, directly or indirectly, for any reason whatever, in the internal or external affairs of any other state " And v\' o pray tell, does one "mediate" with? Fidel Castro" The communists have every reason to want to destabilize Nicaragua It has been a consistent friend of the United States It offered troops to help in both Korea and Vietnam It has regularly supported our positions at the United Nations and in various international conferences. And. Nicaragua is the one practical site for a canal between the Atlantic and Pacific outside of Panama. The purpose of this column is not to excuse Somoza's short comings he has plenty of them But. it is to help put some perspective on an issue which has been clouded in the United States by superficial news coverage and a lot of bubble- headed rhetoric If Somoza is such a tyrant, why does the opposition party in the legislature hold forty percent of the seats' ' That is the minimum required by the constitution The Republicans on Capitol Hill have fewer than that And. if Somoza stifles all opposition why has the nation's largest newspaper attacked him time and time again0 When Pedro Chamorro. the publisher of the newspaper was assassinated last January, Some American news media smelled a Somoza plot Chamorro's killers were caught, tried and jailed. They said they had been hired by a Cuban-American from Miami who runs a business in Nicaragua which was under attack by Chamorro's paper. Still, both the Washington Post and the Washington Star refer to Chamorro's killing as "unsolved". Come on folks. Perhaps the liberals in the media and our government should spend a few moments reflecting on this question. After Nicaragua. which country next0 Classroom Etiquette "What dirty hands you have. Tommy!" said the young teacher. "What would you say if I came to school without washing my hands?" "Wouldn't say anything," replied Tommy. "I'd be too polite." That's something Costomer: "Have you any thing for gray hair." Conscientious Druggist: "Nothing but the greatest respect, sir."
