SECTION 1 SUPPLEMENT TO McHENRY PLA1NDEALER - PAGE 3 - TUESDAY, NOVEMBER Season of beauty •» for young and old By HELEN KLEIN Metro Netcgpaper Services The Christmas season raises expectat ions in people of al l ages, fai ths and nationali t ies. There are very few. indeed, who do not look forward eagerly in one way or another to the holidays, do not anticipate the wealth of sensations, the mul t i tudes of joys that make up that great , big, bri l l iantly wrapped package we know as ' Christmas." For older people, Christmas is a t imefor nostalgia, a chance to look back on the pleasures of the past , to revel in memories that are more and more special as the years go by. For children. Christmas is a t ime of anticipation, an oppor tunity to look forward to a myriad of experiences, both large and small , that wil l eventually become their past to look back on. gladly and fondly. Any Christmas is suc cessful if i t matches the pre cious recollections of the old and fulf i l ls the sugarplum dreams of the young and in nocent. Memories of Christmas are l ike family heir looms, gli t ter ing ornaments on a stately tree that are passed down lovingly from generation to generation They are some what faded pictures in the album of the past , per petuated. almost as bright as ever, through retel l ing to the young. So many elements make up the holiday season, elements that are integral parts of the abundant, joyous memories to be treasured for years to come. There are sights and smells and tastes, hundreds and hundreds of things which, al l together, form the unique enti ty that is Christmas. When the Christmas sea son opens, the gay garlands of green and red l ights go up on Main Street , becoming in candescent in the misty twil ight of a frosty w intei evening. Shop windows take on a fest ive air , those that are simply decorated as well as those that are elaborately ar ranged with intr icate, fantasy-fi l led dioramas. The aroma of pine is everywhere. Fir branches fesloon the lofty ceil ings of large department stores where happily frenetic crowds throng the aisles in search of the special gif t for that special person Outside, the streets are scented with roast ing chestnuts, peanuts, other taste treats part icular to the t ime of year. Santas, of every shape and si /e . stand guard over chimneys and kett les and remind the endless stream of passers-by that Christmas is a t ime for generosity to those who are in need Suddenly, the home front is a cheerful f lurry of activi ty. Fireplaces, soon to be hung with brightly-colored stock ings which Santa will s teal th i ly f i l l , blaze cheeri ly on cold evenings in anticipation of the Yule log. The smells of baking and cooking waft through the air as Grandma and Mom pre pare their own special rec ipes: frosted gingerbread cookies in fanciful shapes; luscious buttery cookies decorated with colored sug a r ; s w e e t , s t i c k y f r u i t cake; brandied mincemeat pies. F.veryone begins dreaming of turkey with stuffing and c r a n b e r r y s a u c e ; p l u m p , glazed ham studded with cloves; creamy eggnog; and old-fashioned plum pudding: al l the tradit ional Christmas dinner treats that are food for smiles. Christmas tree ornaments, collected over the years, are taken out of storage lovingly in preparation for the tree i t self . which will majest ical ly dominate the scene. I he <jch, joyous sounds of carols are ever-present . Ev eryone. from the Santa at the corner to the neighborhood merchant, seems to have a t u n e o n h i s o r h e r l i p s . Everywhere, bells are ring ing Sprigs of holly and mis t letoe f ind their way to the oddest places as December passes. Everything reminds one that i t is . in t ruth, the sea son to be jolly." Everyone glows with the dual joys of giving and receiv ing. Junior dreams, perhaps, of the new train set he hopes to find under the tree; Mom, of his face as he opens the large, somewhat unwieldy box that means so much. All dream of the family re union they have been eagerly await ing for months. And then, at long last , Christmas arrives, fulf i l l ing the fondest wishes, making the dearest dreams come true and be coming the material of which memories are made. With some preparation and a lot of love, this Christmas will be the Christmas to re member . . . always.
