Or at least it seems that the West Suburban Catholic conference should change its name. ' , Of the eight teams in the leagiie, seven boast at least one player on their roster that is at least 6'6". Only one team in the conference doesn't have an imposing post man. Marian. First year coach Hans Rokus doesn't have anyone 6'6". In fact, the biggest player on Marian's entire 18-man team is almost a half-foot shorter. But, Rokus hasn't given up hope. "We are going to compensate for our lack of height by run ning and pressing." the first- year head coach explained. Rokus is not new to Marian. For the last two seasons, he served as assistant head coach to Bud Grover. For the eight years previous to that he was head sophomore coach. Now he faces a seemingly impossible task of improving on last year's second division finish "We will have a hustling, scrappy type of club," he in dicated. "We'll let the wins take care of themselves." Although short on height, the Canes are not short on ex perience. Six letterman return from last year's team and Rokus is going to rely heavily on seven or eight front-line players. "Four players started alot last year and did the bulk of the scoring." the coach added. Jay Grover, a six-foot guard from Woodstock, and Mike Wenzel, another six-foot guard, will proably emerge as the team leaders for the Hurricanes They were among the scoring leaders on last year's team and the full-year of experience earned as juniors won't hurt their performance this year. The guards will have to do most of Marian's scoring, as their frontline will have trouble in the land occuppied by the giant postmen of other teams in the circuit Darryl May, a 6'1" senior from Johnsburg will see plenty of action at forward May just finished a very successful cross-country season by taking third place in the state Class A meet Kurt Parker, a 6'0" senior guard played consistently last year and is expected to help out with the scoring "We are going to employ a pressing and running attack to utilize the skills of the back- court players we have." Rokus said "We will try to fast break when we can get the ball off of the board " Getting the ball off of the boards may be a problem, although Ro.kus leels that although his team is shorter their hustle and scrappy play will help get the ball for the offense. At 6'1",. Jay Huemann, a senior from Johnsburg, will be playing at one of the front-line positions. Huemann will play both center and forward He wasn't on last year's team Junior Brian Caufield, at 6'1", is expected to help out up front and according to Rokus, will see plenty of action Two seniors, Ken Bottari, a 5' 10" guard and John Hayden, a 5'9" guard, round out the top eight for the Hurricanes Other players on the squad include juniors Mike DiPirro. a 5' 11" guard-forward; Doug Dusthimer, a 510" guard; Chris Juzwik, a 5' 10" guard; Tony Radanovich, a 5'8" guard; Chris Reckamp, a 6 1" forward; Mike Sharp, a 5'9" guard; Bob Sleconich, a 6'0" forward, Ron Waytula, a 5'9" guard; and Bob Weltzien, a 5'10" guard Jim Mayer, a 6 1" forward is a sophomore, presently on the varsity roster. "Mayer has some offensive potential." according to Roukus, "and we are taking a good look at him right now " "We are going to use a pressure defense, Rokus explained, "in an effort to cause as many turnovers as possible." Rokus said that offensively, the team will operate much of the time without a postman "We are going to spread the offense out," he continued, "so we can draw the opposition's big men away from the basket." The lack of overall height will hurt the Marian rebounding, but Rokus realizes there is one way to overcome a rebounding problem. "We will have to shoot the ball well against the bigger teams," he said, "then we won't need as many rebounds." Rokus is assisted by former Marian player Tom Blenner and by Mark Vitali Gerry Muldowney is the sophomore coach, who has 20 players on his team and Lew Miskowicz is the coach of 25 freshman. The number 5 ranked team in the state last year, will be the favorite in this year's race for the West Suburban Catholic conference crown "Benet Academy has their entire starting lineup back," said Rokus. "and have added a 6'9" sophomore to the team " Benet will be led by two all staters Mike Lang at 6'8" and Bob Conrad at 6 '1" are two of Coach Hans Rokus is pictured with the remaining members of his team. Front row, left to right are Bob Sleconich, Ron Waytula, Tony Radanovich, Mike Sharp and Doug Dusthimer. In the back row are (left to right) Jim Mayer, Chris Juzwik, Bob Weltzien, Mike DiPirro and Chris Reckamp. Roukus has 18 players on his roster. the finer players in the Chicago area "The rest of the league will fight for second place," Rokus explained Montini, Marmion and Driscoll should round out the upper division of the con ference "All three teams have quite a few returning letterman," Rokus explained, "and the remaining t^ams all have at least one big center " To prepare for the tough Suburban Catholic conference season, Marian will compete in the Woodstock Thanksgiving tournament, where their first game will be against a very formidable opponent "We open against Rockford East " Rokus said, "and they were number four in the state last year " Rockford East is led by John Griffin a 6'2" player who swings between guard and forward He was all-state in football and basketball The first conference game for Marian will be Dec 1 at Marmion in Aurora So early in the season, Marian will be put to the test Maybe their pressing defense and running offense will enable them to outrun the giants But to win in the land of the giants, they will have to shoot well With such a distinct height disadvantage, rebounds may be hard to come by S T A F F P H O T O S / W A Y N E G 4 Y L O R D S T O R Y / J O E I ) E H \ This is the first year as head varsity coach for Hans Kokus at Marian. Who's the thief? Your toilet bowl, a frequent felon who counts on time and care lessness to make his thefts possible. The American Water Works Association advises you to make at least occas ional checks, because a huge quantity of water can be wasted every week The most frequent trouble spot is the plunger ball at the bottom of a toilet tank, al though the overflow pipe can be a problem, too. The Association suggests you open your tank and watch what happens during a flush KURT PARKER Guard 6*0" Senior so you'll better understand how to keep the system in watertight repair. The water level should come up to a half inch or so below the overflow pipe. Gently bend the float arm down, if necessary, so the valve shuts off the water at that level. If the valve itself is leaking, you may need to call a plumber. Drop a bit of colored liquid into the tank Without flushing, see if any comes out in the bowl If it does, you probably have a leak around the ball at the bottom of the tank. Get busy and fix it. And make a note to yourself to check again in about six months. Pregnant, NEED HELP?!
