Team 69-61 By Dick Rabbitt The Jacobs Golden Eagles won their opening game of the Fox Valley over the Warriors 69 to 61 Tuesday night at Jacobs The game was scheduled early Tuesday morning between the two schools and therefore a small crowd was on hand for the conference opener for both teams Jimmy Johnson put the Warriors ahead 2 to 0 in the first minute of play, but the Ragles fought back, and the score exchanged hands several times before the hosts took a 17 to 16 lead at the quarter. The teams played even the second period each scoring 14 pts , with Bob Bitterman coming off the bench to pick up six of the fourteen The Warriors trailed 31 to 30 at the intermission Early in the third period the Warriors jumped out to a 36 to 33 lead and seemed headed for a good night, when the Eagles put on the press In the en susing minutes the Eagles scored 10 unanswered points to forge ahead 43 to 36. and the outlook was dim for the Warriors. However. the Warriors shook off the shock of the press and came roaring back to trial 49 to 45 at the end of the period Twice in the final period the Warriors managed to catch up and tie the game, the last at 5:15 when Len Jensen hit two free throws, but the Warriors faltered in the stretch and went down to defeat 69 to 61. This game was a lot closer than the 8 points on the scoreboard. The Warriors hustled up and down the floor all evening, but the mistakes were too costly for the Warrior crew Both teams had numerous turnovers, and the Warriors had a bad evening at the free throw line only canning 9 Tonight Crown invades Buckner Gym. and tomorrow night Grant is in town. 1978-79 WINTER SPORTS McHENRY HIGH SCHOOL VARSITY Vlcllenrv T Zeller Thomas Johnson Jensen Prust B Zeller Bitterman Totals Jacobs fg ft pf 4 1 5 4 0 7 3 2 1 0 2 9 22 61 Bradshaw ' Mike Hudson Rohde Gaulke Mark Hudson Butler Krich Ben To (;©* Mcllenr\ Jacobs fft R 15 16 69 Ili 17 til «!» m & EARL WALSH So I Hear .SPORTS EDITOR Clearing Off The Sports Desk HORSEM WSIIIP Having returned from the Tulsa State Fair. Sure -- I watched the Bears play or try to play football Monday night It was pitiful It was sad The San Diego Chargers w ere real chargers as they came off their marks with mucho gusto. , The Chargers showed a great passing game that made the Bears' defense look woefully weak W hen a team throws a bomb on first down, look out None of that old stuff hit the line twice then pass on third down for the Chargers Note to Mayor Bilandic: S I 11 had it in print before you made that crack about looking at Pete Rose's salary in comparison with the checks elected officials take home to mama Must say those big increases won't bring votes at election time There seems to be a big question as to when elected officials salaries can be raised and when the raise takes effect. Although there were a few games played, most of the schools took the night off due to the bad weather The Warriors were no exception as basketball and wrestling were called off. Play begins tonight in the Fox Valley, although the Warriors and Jacobs square off along with Woodstock and Dundee on Tuesday night. Which brings up a good point Why can't games be scheduled for Tuesday and Friday nights, instead of the Friday-Saturday double headers With the distance to travel just a few short miles, teams can play on a Tuesday night, and 1 don't think it would interfere with the educational process. Saturday night basketball games like the Saturday afternoon football games don't draw the crowds. I guess tf you have a state power, and have every seat sold for the year via a season ticket holder you may survive. We are going to have a nice example this weekend Tonight the Warriors host Crown, a pre-season favorite in the Fox Valley. Tomorrow night an old foe, the Grant Bulldogs, come to town Two big games for the Warriors on their schedule We will compare the crowd on Friday night against the crowd on Saturday night If the Saturday night crowd equals or exceeds Friday night, I will pull in my horns In the Fox Valley tonight I pick the Vikings over the Warriors Jacobs to defeat Woodstock, Cary to beat Dundee, and Central to beat city rival South. A lot of honors were passed out to McHenry High athletes this past week Congratulations are in order to Bill Heinrich of the water polo team, Sue Hutchinson of the tennis team, Chris Connell of field hockey, and Diane Peterson in volleyball Each of these fine young people,; was selected the most valuable members of their respective teams the past week All of these people richly deserve the honors bestowed upon them, and the school and community should be proud of these people Coach Marty Sobczak's "Hassling Warriors" will travel to Crown tonight, and tomorrow afternoon at l:00 p.m go to Libertyville Two big matches for the Warriors, and we all wish them well this weekend Sue Hutchinson Selected Most Valuable In Tennis Sue Hutchinson, a junior on Coach Gary Gray's tennis team this past fall, was selected< as the Most Valuable Player Sue played the number one singles all year, and (fualified for the state finals Senior Carol Latz was selected as the Most Im proved (>IHI.S TENNIS WV ARDS MAJOR M • Sue Hutchinson; Carol l^atz Tracy Burgess; MelissaDowe Kerry Kraus and Jenny Prust MINORM Julie Allen.
