»•»* IIKU'IX, I'AWS ANIMAL WELFARE ASSOCIATION P.O. Box 205 * Crystal Lake, Illinois 60014 • (815)459-2641 By Kathleen Thayer Every now and then during the year. Helping Paws takes time out to answer questions about our policies and procedures. Why do people adopt a cat or dog from us for a fee, when they could get one free from a\ friend9 The answer is that in the long run it costs less money to adopt from HP than to get one free This is due to our spay-neuter costs which save the owner over half the cost of the surgery .performed by his own veterinarian. We do provide special financial assistance to those people who are in need This is determined by our field representative who visits the home to receive pertinent in formation regarding the ser vice to be performed. Our foster home program is designed to help stray or in jured dogs and cats. Those pets placed in foster homes have had a full vet exam and shots. The foster home is required only to temporarily provide a loving home, while HP pays for vet care and other extras Pets that are home owned receive space in our columns for adoption Dogs adopted from Animal Control within specified county towns are followed up by a vist to the home by a HP field representative All pets adopted through HP must be validated by a contract fee and spay-neuter registration sheet If these three transactions are not completed at the time of the adoption. HP does not consider it a valid adoptkvn !t is possible that soiyieone might misrepresent themselves as an agent of HP If they do not possess contract papers from our agency, then it is a misrepresentation Another service provided by our columns rs for pets lost and found This requires so much time that the office phone is ringing constantly with reports We are looking for a McHenry county resident who would like to lend us a helping hand by taking those reports at home A perfect job for someone housebound who wants to help area pets and people. There would be no cost to our Lost and Found representative -Form* and training would be provided in your home If interested please call the office between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. daily af815-459- 2641, or evenings at 312-658- 7221. Now that the cold weather is upon us so are the many found cats appearing on door steps. These are outdoor cats who are free-spirited roamers during the spring, summer and fall months of the year Please open your hearts to them as well as a spot in your garage. They will not be permanent residents, but they do need a bed of straw and some good food and water until they return home, or can once again provide for themselves. Report the animal as found to our office and hopefully his owner will respond in time. DECEMBER 8, 1978 Trenton Victory Christmas Gift C o r r o s i o n A n d Y o u r C a r Caroling Party In Melbourne • The world's greatest caroling party is held in Melbourne on Christmas Eve The attendance has been as high as 300,000 The Christmas Eve gathering pre sents a breath taking spectacle for every singer carries a lighted candle The event is known as "Carols By Candlelight" The Yule event has been tied in with a charitable appeal in behalf of sick and disabled youngsters When help was first sought, the response was only a trickle of contributions Later, money poured in such a flood that a whole new hospital unit for children was built at a cost of about 300,000 pounds Each year the crowds for "Carols By Candlelight" has in creased Everybody comes, regardless of race, religious or social position Rust on your tail pipe? It may surprise ypu to realize that it's part of an expensive national problem: corro sion. Corrosion is the eating away of metal due to its exposure to various environ ments, especially moisture. A comprehensive study undertaken by the National Bureau of Standards (N6S) estimated that metallic cor rosion costs the United States about $70 billion a year. Its cost to American automobile owners is be tween $6 and $14 billion. Corrosion costs for auto mobiles fall into one of three categories: money paid for built-in protection, such as heavier, more expen sive metals, special designs or special coatings; money spent on maintenance or operating costs, such as the replacement of mufflers, tail pipes, and radiators or painting. The last category, prob ably the most costly, Is premature replacement--the loss incurred by selling a car early at a reduced value and buying another because of corrosion damage. Fortunately, the NBS study also indicated that automobile owners could save between $2 and $8 billion through the use of anti-corrosion techniques and improved maintenance. The more you know about corrosion, what causes it, how it attacks metals, the better able you will be to combat it. Paints, lacquers, inhibitors, and oils can be used effectively with different metals to prevent corrosion. Commercially marketed and homemade preparations can be effec tive in removing corrosion from a metal object once it has occurred. C O R R O S I O N C O S T S T H E U . A pamphlet, "Corrosion Facts from the Consumer," published by NBS, explains the various types of corro sion, how to prevent and remove them, and a guide to anti-corrosion features to look for when purchasing metal objects. Our religious freedoms are sometimes lightly regarded by certain Americans today, but back in the days when our coun try was very young, the freedom to worship as we pleased was one of the hard fought victories of the Revolution The foundation for the preser vation of the freedom to celebrate such beliefs as Chri^mas -- this was the gift of our country on that December day 1776 It happened when George Washington and his men won the battle at Trenton -- that was the beginning of a long line of vic tories that led to independence with complete religious freedom CLEANING SERVICE INC.
