O'Connor last week denied <a set of rate increase requests filed by Health Care Service corporation (Blue Cross-Blue Shield of Chicago) that would have affected approximately 386,000 policyholders. The requested rate hikes would have raised premiums on 260,000 Medicare sup plement policies which in sure nearly 60 percent of all Illinois senior citizens. O'Connor cited insufficient evidence in the filing documents to justify the requested increases. Or are you? There are many kinds of addiction; not just pills, cigarettes or alcohol. But those are the ones we think of when the word "addict" is used. How about coffee? Coffee contains caffeine. Caffeine is a drug. Caffeine is a stimulant which increases the secretion of acid in your stomach. It causes the heart to beat faster, increases lung action, Works the kidneys harder and makes the blood sugar rise and fall. You call the results'of drinking too much caffeine "heartburn", "nervousness" and "in somnia". You may be annoyed by frequent urination. Because of its stimulating effect, coffee wakes you up in the morning. It is the heavy coffee drinking habit which overstimulates your body to the impairment of your health. People, being unique, have different tolerances to coffee so the same number of cups per day may be too much for one person and not produce symptoms at all in another. However, you don't require symptoms to question drinking quantities of coffee each day. Caffeine is also present in lesser amounts in tea and cola drinks. Used in large quantities these drinks produce the same over- stimulating effects to the body. * The innocent looking cups of cocoa we offer our children on a cold day also contain caffeine. Cocoa contains approximately the same ainount of caffeine as a cup of tea. While a morning or afternoon cup of cocoa won't wreak havoc with most children's health, it should be noted that heavy cocoa drinking may account for excessive nervousness in children. Significant symp toms of nervousness or excitement in children should be investigated in any event. Mlv Pregnant women, people using other drugs prescribed by their physician regularly and people with heart or stomach problems are strongly advised to consult their physician regarding their intake of caffeine. Decaffeinated coffee is an effective substitute for many regular coffee drinkers. Diet colas contain less caffeine than regular colas, but with the carcinogen question still unresolved, a better switch might be to fruit juices. If you're not counting calories, other carbonated beverages are a viable substitute. And, if you're really just thirsty, why not try water? * Church Women In Annual Retreat OH, DOC ..
