McHenry School League Raymond's Bowl 2-21-80 These are the times that try men's souls, bowling talents, and patience. We have just two weeks left and one is regular rotation and one is position, so the standings and trophies' races are critical. There are things to learn and things not to learn, but B. Miller did not have to learn to loft the ball from G. Vitale. C. Young outdid himself and rolled five strikes in a row (not a turkey, but an ostrich) for a free pizza, and Willie's Dillies won the team pizza with 2,576, highest for the season....show offs!! High games were rolled by: S. Blume, 219; A. Boeldt, 215; B. Thompson, 204; D. Cameron and B. Street, 197; and L. Johnson, 191. High series was dominated y the "fair sex" with S. Blume gleaning a 568; C. Young, 562; W. Farrell, 557; B. Doran, 546; and B. Thompson, 534. Don't know what the Vitales had going this week, but the only two splits picked up were G. Vitale, 6-8 and S. Vitale, 5-6-7. Read the LUCIOUS standings: W.G.A.S. Matt Niermen captured the diving championship. \ ° STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAYLORD EARL WALSH" So I Hear SPORTS EDITOR. 13 16 22 13 21 4 14 17 This February thaw brings thoughts of contrast in earlier days when they held horse and cutter races on Fox River in the winter months. Horses had to be sharp-shod as cutters glided over the ice. Seems to me that Marty Knox owned a racer. So did Math Freund, prominent farm machinery dealer on Pearl Street. Young people would skate up to Johnsburg and return for a weenie roast on the banks of Fox River. The Ben Stilling girls were strong skaters. So was Margaret Stenger. In grade school days, most families owned only one pair of skates which were strapped onto the shoes. Sometimes you had to share the pair and try to manipulate on only one skate. --And we call those the good old days. People have started to look for the first robin of the spring. Those feathered friends should be warned that March is coming, a month that can hit you right over the ear. Mrs. Joe J. Miller of Waukegan Street says we stole some of her birds. Maybe she should raise homing pigeons. Politicians are picking up steam for the coming primary elections. Some are making moves that are as obvious as the nose on your face. Some can fool some of the people all of the time if not all of the people all of the time. But, there are good men and women seeking office who are sincere and trust worthy. Voters have to sift the chaff from the wheat. That is a privilege we enjoy in this country. Ray Nelson demonstrated his new (patent pending) hearing aid at the last McHenry Rotary meeting. Just think -- no batteries! There may be some rough edges to rub off before he starts selling stock in the company. Mass production has not started. Winter Special! Our mechanic must eat during the winter too, so we want to keep him busy! We like some fun in S.I.H., but could have written a full column on comments picked up along the beat after the City Council raised various fees and licenses at a recent meeting. Oh, what they said! Now most of the comments are toned down since they are satisfied that public pressure has brought about reconsideration. Hit citizens in the pocketbook and that's where the pain becomes more intense. Chicago has a winner in sports at long last. The unbeaten DePaul basketball team has fans agog. Loyola was the last team to give the Blue Demons a scare, but couldn't quite swing it. Loyola players have been quoted as blaming the of ficials. Maybe. We dunno. And maybe the officials robbed Aguirre of tying his school record when he dropped in a basket to gather 43 points. The basket wasn't allowed on a travelling call. If he travelled, the replay didn't show it. SUDDEN THOUGHT- Do you remember having to stay out of the kitchen when your mother baked a cake? She was afraid if you shook the floor the cake would fall before it cooled. There is good news tonight! Winning a gold medal, the U.S. hockey team has brought much celebrating by Olympic followers. When you think of the young hockey players assembled in a short period of time, you must think somebody up there loves them. Youth, determination and fire was evident in all the games. Their batteries were really charged up high. We are pleased to receive a note and pictures from Carolyn Law, signed "Barb's sister". The pictures, colored and clear, were taken as Barb Weber wheeled me around the course as the McHenry Country Club Championship was being played. picture from our neighbor of days gone by, Margaret Miller Stoffel. I plan to print the picture as soon as some of those in the picture can be identified. (I'm coming to see you, Ed Bonslett). Margaret now resides in Woodstock, but she and her late husband, George Miller, grew up on McHenry's West Side. Good neighbors. Since Bob Adams slimmed down, it was expected he would bowl his weight in the Forester tournament. Now comes a report that his high game was 117 pins. Final reports are not in, but he may have reached the weight total in a 3-game series. • All I know is what I hear.
