CARRYOUTS AVAILABLE 1 RESTAURANT ^OPEN 7 DAYS FIFTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of March 6, 1930) McHenry county was back in the headlines in theChicago papers. The reason seems to be because three men armed with shotguns and revolvers leaped upon Edward Tessendorf, in his barn on the old Andrew Peterson farm one mile and a half northeast of Ridgefield, blindfolded him and led him to his house where they tied him to his bed together with his wife. The reason for this resulted from the finding of a gleaming stone as big as a fiat in a ditch on the Tessendorf property. News of the discovery spread and the value of the stone mounted until gossip placed it at $40,000. The robbers must have been sadly disappointed when they found the actual value was probably about $300: Members of Riverview camp R.N.A., will celebrate the nineteenth anniversary of the camp at their next meeting. At six o'clock dinner will be served at Bidder's hotel, after which the members will go to the, hall for the meeting. E.J. Bylsma, a farmer living west of McHenry, was one of nine persons who were granted citizenship in. the Circuit court at Woodstock. FORTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of February 29, 1940) One of the most out standing events of the high school curricular activities will be the concert presented by the instrumental departments of the Com munity high school. Before the concert is given, the soloists and ensembles will go to Glen Ellyn to compete against other talented musicians of Boone, DeKalb, Kane, DuPage and McHenry counties, The 10 Republicans and two Democractic candidates for state representatives from the Eighth Senatorial district were slightly hampered by snowbound roads from speeding up their campaigns in Lake, McHenry and Boone counties for the April 9 primary. The two Democratic candidates, Rep. Thomas A. Bolger of McHenry and Jack H. Hoff of Waukegan, both seeking one nomination certified by the senatorial committee, have mapped out slam-bang campaigns in line with the state fight. TWENTY-FIVE YEARSAGO (Taken from the files of March 5, 1955) The organizational meeting of the Diocesan Council of Catholic Women, a unit of the National Council' of Catholic Women, was held in Rockford. Attending as representatives of the local county deanery were the officers, Mrs. Edward Buss, president; Mrs. Eugene Kenney, secretary ; and Mrs. Harold Foss, treasurer. Eight McHenry men were among 927 who received honors of the fourth degree of the Knights of Columbus at a secret ceremony held in the HiUon hotel, Chicago. Those from 'McHenry so honored were A.P. Freund, Eugene B. Freund, Leonard M. Freund, Leo Freund, Walter Freund, Daniel Justen and Eugene P. Nye. The St. Patrick's grade school basketball team travelled to Sterling to play in the diocesan finals and lost a heart breaker to St. Mary's of Sterling. The score was 44 to 35. Matt Eichinger had 13 points and Jim Conway, 9. This was the fourth straight victory for Sterling. TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of March 6, 1970) Concern over the use of a building on John street, owned by McHenry Country club, for storage of golf carts brought a protest from the City Council. The building, it was reported, has been used for storage of equipment such as mowers. The second story of the building is used as a residential unit. Residents of Allen avenue contend that the reported 40 golf carts, added to the expected parking of automobiles on the lot, would be objectionable and tend to depreciate the value of their property. City officials went on record as looking with disfavor on the golf cart plan and will attempt to resolve the problem in a reasonable manner.
