The taxpayer must compute the tax expected to be owed for 1979. Any pre­ payments of tax from withholdings or estimated tax payments, etc., should be deducted from the tax. Payment of any balance due must be sent with Form 4868 to the IRs on or before the normal filing date. Taxpayers who receive the extension cannot use the Form 1040A or have the IRS compute their tax bill. They •must file a Form 1040 and the amount of estimated tax paid with the Form 4868 should be entered on the appropriate line of the Form 1040. / If the amount of tax paid with the Form 4868 does not cover the taxpayer's total liability, the taxpayer is retfuired to pay interest on the remaining tax due. U.S. citizens outside the U.S. or Puerto Rico on the date of their tax deadlines can receive an automatic two-month extension of the filing deadline without filing Form 4868. This provision applies both to taxpayers whose deadline is April IS and to those who file returns on a fiscal year basis. Taxpayers who qualify for this type of extension must attach a ;i statement to their, tax return when they file' that says they were outside the U.S. or Puerto Rico on the date of their filing deadline. Taxpayers who expect to file Form 2555, "Deduction from or Exclusion of, In­ come Earned Abroad", can obtain an extension of time until 30 days after the end of their qualifying period. If moving expenses are in­ volved, extra time can be obtained by following the special Instructions of the Form 2350. Additional extensions are granted only under unusual circumstances. Taxpayers can apply for, such ex­ tensions by letter or by filling out Form 2688, "Application for Extension of Time to File U.S. In­ dividual Income Tax Return". The statement must include the reasons why the additional extension is necessary. The IRS cautions tax­ payers to file requests; for. additional extensions early enough to be able to file their return on time if the request is rejected. National Guard In Recruiting Campaign The Illinois National Guard is launching a campaign for new members, entitled "THe'-Governor's 1980 Recruiting Drive." The drive began April 1 and continues through June. Governor James' * R. Thompson, commander-in- chief of the Guard, has ex­ pressed concern about the National Guard being below authorized personnel strength. The Illinois Army National Guard has about 3,000 vacancies and the Air Guard needs about 300 new members. During his recent budget message Governor Thompson said increased funding is needed "to help us improve and strengthen our National Guard, as the world grows more dangerous and as emergencies of man and nature erupt upon the land­ scape of Illinois." The National Guard is a state military force, organized to provide support in state or local emergen­ cies, as well as being* prepared to assume a role as the primary augmentation to federal forces in national or international emergencies. Major General John R. Phipps, adjutant general of Illinois, said both men and women are needed to fill the vacancies in the National Guard in order to maintain the organization's readiness to respond to any emergencies. The general said it takes a wide variety of jobs to keep the National Guard ready for its missions. The Guard provides skill training for these jobs in many career fields. Members of the Guard are paid for their training, which they receive one weekend a month and two weeks each summer. General Phipps said, "One of the best benefits we have is a four-year scholarship, which provides full tuition and some fees at any state supported 'college or university." National Guard scholarship and mem­ bership information may be obtained at any National Guard armory or air base. Lambs Host Classic Car Club On Weekend The Classic Car club of greater northern Illinois will help kick off Easter weekend activities at the Lambs, Inc., April 5. Scheduled to arrive at 10:30 a.m., the Classic Car club will display its vehicles for public viewing and an­ swer questions on the value and care of these stylish models of yesteryear. Following the Classic Car club's appearance, the Lambs' Giant Easter Egg hunt will begin at 1:30 p.m. in the Shopping Mall near the Country Store. The Easter Bunny will serve as chief official as youngsters up to age 11 search for thousands of colorful eggs. Over 100 prizes will be given away during the egg hunt. The Lambs, Inc., is a private, not-for-profit organization offering jobs, vocational training, housing and social activities to mentally retarded men and women, located on a 51 acre complex east of Libertyville, at the junction of Tri-State Tollway 1-94 and 111. Carroll will represent McHenry county and the Eighth district at Springfield during the next two years. He ran second in the race, being topped only by Lyons. McHenry county gave the local man good support, with 16,392 votes, his total in the three counties being 23,756. Two hold-up men walked into the Fox River Grove bank, walked over ; to Richard Novak, cashier, and the only man in the bank at the time, and asked for traveller's checks; while he turned around to get them, they covered him with a gun and proceeded to get while the getting was good, making off with some $1,500. The one man kept the cashier covered while the other scooped up the cash. The two men orderd Mr. Novak into their new car, put him in the rumble seat and took hiip for a ride. Some three miles from Fox River Grove they let him out. FORTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of April 4, 1940) The report of the city treasurer, Robert L. Weber, at the City Council meeting showed the tidy balance of $6,263.59 in the general fund. In view of the unusual emergency expenses arising from time to time the Council has made a special effort to carry through the fiscal year with a fair balance on hand. The Council designated Monday, April 29, as the annual meeting. In addition to receiving annual reports, the Council will approve ap­ plication on tavern and all alcoholic beverage licenses at the annual meeting.
