McHENRY TRANSMISSIONS 926 N. Front St . ^MM Of ©|fl McHenry, Illinois # OU "Highlight Agricultural Artifacts Tammeus Heads Museum How many children do married women expect to have within the next five years? Will they average the same number as in the recent past? Answers to these questions will help indicate the future growth and composition of the Nation's population, data vital to planners both in government and private business. Stanley D. Moore, director of the bureau's regional office in Chicago, announced that information on birth expectations of American women will be collected during the week of June 16- 20, from a sample of households in this area. The questions are in addition to those usually asked in the monthly survey on em ployment and unem ployment conducted nationwide by the Bureau for the U.S. Department of Labor. Fact Darling, this cake is delicious^Did you buy it yourselfr -The Gosport. Sunday, June IS, at 2:30 p.m. the McHenry County Historical museum in Union *ill present a very special guided tour highlighting the many agricultural artifacts housed in the museum. This unique tour will be led by William H. Tammeus of Woodstock, long associated with the growth and strengthening of agriculture x^MeHenry as well as the "restSjftne world. Fromttm to 1956 Tam meus served as farm ad visor. It was during this time and under his . leadership that two institutions took shape in McHenry. In 1947 the conservation district that McHenry takes such pride in today was started, and two years later, the McHenry County fair was reactivated and enlarged to include the 4-H. Besides these ac complishments, Tammeus developed the. county-wide house numbering system used for 2 years to simplify and standardize street ad dresses throughout the county and just recently made official by county 7 ordinance. As much as anyone can, Bill Tammeus knows McHenry* county and its agricultural roots. i Farming has cornea long way since the 1830's and the first settlers cultivated corn on <the "hills near Algonquin. But the implements they used to farm with and the household possessions that functioned in their homesteads may still be viewed at the historical museum in Union. Bill Tammeus will explain what a reverse plow is and will show early corn shelters and seed corn driers so necessary for next year's planting. Marsh shoes and ox bows, farm wagon and horsedrawn sleigh, buffalo robes and farm kitchen Americana are there, too as part of the testimony to this county's agricultural heritage. The Tammeus trip through farm history is especially designed for the entire family. Museum visitors should bring curiosity and questions. Tammeus will supply the answers. The museum is open Sunday from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. Members are admitted free. There is a small ad mission fee for non- members.
