& . SNEAKING INTO SECOND-Is Dick Kaslowsld of Foxhole u look* toward home plate for a poctible play. Second Federal's Mike Fick DIVOT DOLLS M.C'.C In spite of record low temperatures all the "shoulda stayed at homers" from last week returned to the golf course at McHenry C.C. Tuesday to play their "Most Fives" event under blue and sunny skies. Winners in the oneway event were Floss O'Connell in Class A with five, Gloria Otth and Irene Kinnamen in Class B with five, Dot Christiensen in Class C with four and Mary Mutchinsky, Jackie Victor, Virginia Spengel and Freida Miller in Class D, each with three! Low Net in Class A of 72 was tied between Lynn Sch midt and Dot Freund (Dot, incidently, having her lowest round to date); in Class B Glorious Gloria Otth low- netted 76, in Class C it was Eunice Hatch with 72 and in Class D one of our new members, Ursula Sisliek, low netted with 74. Low Putts * < as they were recorded found Carol Cooney in Class A with 30, Anna Johnson in B with 30, Maddie Holmes in C with 30 and aforementioned Ursula with 29. 9 \ Although only three birr dies were reported they were all scored by our Blonde Bomber, Carol C. who under- parred No. 4, No. 6 and No. 14. However, several Chip- ins were noted, to wit: Toots Gerstad on No. 2, Dot Christiensen on No. 5, Esther Jemiola on No. 8 (to hold par), Betty Phaien on No. 11, Anna Johnson on No.l 4 and Dot Freund on No. 17 (another par saver). _ The "Mutt and Jeff" event for the Nifty Niners found Lorraine Gausden in first place and Peg Anderson in second, both in the A Flight, ̂ with Peg having low putts of 13. In B Flight Ethel Hart- man and Melanie Frett tied for first {dace while Inez Burelli took second. Ethel and Inez tied for low putts with 18 each. In the dubious honors awards the "Poplar Leaf Cluster" was presented to Gen Hoelscher by her golf companions of the day, although both Betty Smith and Betty Phaien seemed to be vying for that con sideration by approaching many of Nature's stately creations. A toss-up for Sandy of the week was between Barb Leight and Inez Burelli. A couple of the more skillful golf shots were executed on the 17th fairway when Pat MacDonald took a rather circuituous route to the green. She managed to smash the ball through one of the trees and a nearby bush to land in perfect position for her approach. Lynn Schmidt's third shot on the long hole caught the bucket on a maintenance vehicle, bounced out and landed over the green. A nice chip-in and one-putt saved her par. And a new award, "Cup Rimmer Cutie" goes to Evie Castle whose ball just wouldn't drop for the roll-in. Evie also appointed herself president of the "Suicide Squad", made up of a number of the "shouldas", namely Letty B., Liz N., Faye S. and Marcy W. Carolyn Harger appears to be part of that group, also, since she declared she doesn't want to play anymore. Shell be back, though. .Aside from the fol-de-rol on Tuesday two events did take place worthy of men tioning. Next week begins Match Play tournament and will be bringing out the more serious side of all the golfers. 'Til then, Happy Golfing! Liz I 16" S0F1MLL Tuesday, Jane 10 Old Bridge vs. Oak Park Strong defense and ex cellent pitching by Kathy Joyce of Old Bridge and Cheryl Markvait of Oak Park held both teams at bay until the top of the fourth when Oak Park broke through and scored three s. The fourth inning was ie time to score, as Old Bridge came back and put three runs across in their half of the inning. Delores Molina, Debbie Hoffmann and Kim Martin had base hits, and a walk to Mary Martinj>ut her on base for Alice Hoffmann who then doubled. The fifth and sixth innings were scoreless for both teams. It wasn't until the bottom of the seventh that another run was scored. Joyce Zoiss who had hit safely was driven in by Delores Molina on her game winning single making the score Old Bridge 4, Oak Park 3. Four Winds vs. Ed's Rental Ed's Rental enjoyed their 1st victory as they defeated Four Winds 17-3. Carol Michels and Jdy Bare each doubled while both Jane Miller and Zelinda Paluck added triples to contribute to the team's 20 hits. Judy Mai was also superb defensively as she threw three runners out at second base. Jane Miller who gave up only three was the winning pit cher. McHenry Limovs. Gearmaster Making her first ap pearance this year as McHenry Limo's pitcher, Shirley Man threw her best and allowed a sole run. McHenry Limo was able to hold Gearmaster and took the game 17-k Good base running, and a double play combination from Annette Hansen at second to Karen Heurer were the main highlights of the game, helping McHenry Limo to win their second game. Palace Bowl vs. Residential A big hitting streak , for Residential saw them through as they beat the undefeated ^Palace Bowl team 23-1. Although Sharon Gray for the Palace team had a double play and a homerun, the bats of RDG proved to be too much. Connie Sanders and Annette Pintozzi each slugged out homeruns, Debbie Meyer doubled and had four RBI's, and Sue McDugal and Dee Carstens had a remarkable double play. Angie went the pit ching distance and chalked up another win. (rain game-Thursday Div.) River Shannon came on top to defeat the V.F.W. in another nail biter 5-4. River Shannon jumped out in the first inning and scored four runs. In the second inning, V.F.W. could only manage one run on River Shannon's defense. It wasn't until the top of the fifth that the V.F.W.'s bats finally let loose. Many fine hits and threey etrors by River Shanhon helped to bring in three runs, and at the end of the fifth the scored was tied 4-4. Defense was strong for both teams, but in the bot tom of the seventh, River Shannon pulled ahead when their first two batters singled, and the next reached base on an error. Dorothy Morowski hit a grounder to the third baseman, and the ball was thrown home for the force, but after the dust cleared, the ump saw that the catcher had dropped the ball so Uie run scored, making the final score 5-4. River shannon's Deb Herdich went five for five, and Colleen Afeld and Dorothy Morowski were the winning pitchers.
