PAGE 12 - PLAINDEALER - WEDNESDAY. JULY 23, ltM Twice Told Tales FIFTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of July 31, 1930) Two delegations of of ficials from the Fox Vallev federation visited this city and vicinity in an effort to obtain relief for down river cities and residents from the low and almost stagnant water conditions in the Fox river. The unusual drought and long heat spell which stopped the supply of rainfall and evaporated large quantities of river water, has caused the unusual low water in the river below the McHenry dam and an unusual growth of water vegetation has helped to retard the ordinary flow of the water. Thieves invaded c4he premises of Gilbert Harris, who lives on a farm about three miles west of McHenry, and stole four tires and rims from a Chevrolet truck and a new tire from a Whippet car. Misses Kathrine and Amelia Regner, daughters of Mr. and Mrs. John Regner of Pistakee Bay, left Jul£ 30 for a trTp abroad. "The late summer will be spent in touring seven different countries of Europe and attending the Passion play at Oberammergau. FORTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of July 26^1940) There were 104 Boy Scout camped registered at Camp Lowden enjoying a week of camping at the new camp site recently made available to the Blackhawk Area council by Col. Frank O. Lowden, former Illinois governor. The little village of Johnsburg, a few miles northwest of McHenry, is happ)%hat it is in America and wishes to make this fact known by erecting a flag pole. The American flag which will be unfurled about 85 feet in the air, will share honors on the hill on which St. John the Baptist church is located. A special election was held at the Lily Lake school at which time it was voted to bond the school district for $2,500 to build an addition and repair the present school building. A total of 33 votes were cast resulting in 31 for the expenditure, one against, and one spoiled ballot. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of July 28, 1955) McHenry's Marine day queen has a busy week ahead with television and radio appearances. She will appear on the Dorsey Connors show, the Elgin radio station, the Ernie Simon show in Chicago, and on the Courtesy Hour. Her last appearance before Marine day will be on the Ray Rayner show. The McHenry County Junior Theatre guild will present its only musical production, "The Pirates of Penzance", with two local girls taking lead parts, Nancy Swanson and Bunny Rose. In one of those rare old- fashioned pitching battles, the Fox Lake baseball team beat the McHenry Shamrocks 1 to 0. "Sonny" Miller pitched the kind of game that will get you in the win column more often than not, but you can't win without runs. The Johnsburg Tigers rapped out 18 safe blows in a 6-1 win over Richmond. TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of July 31, 1970) The new Montini school, which includes both St. Mary's and St. Patrick's parishes, will open with grades l through 8 next fall. After re-registration figures were presented by the school Sisters in charge of the program, and with con sideration of the additional income that would be ggrosiSKEHa ONLY *97f RENTAL • NO installation charge • NEW fully automatic softeners • TWO year option to buy with • FULL rental fee deducted • ONE phone call can answer any quest 312-259-3393 ions ARLINGTON SOFT WATER CO. Seventh and eighth grades will operate on a shared time basis with the Junior high school as they have during the past few years. At least one McHenry resident is adjusting nicely to the 90-plus temperatures of the week, yet paradoxically is looking forward to the first snow fall of the winter. The paradox may be explained when it is revealed that the speaker is Manasseh Gasana, 17, of Uganda, Africa, who arrived to attend M.C.H.S. under the American Field Service program. He is residing with the Alvin Benoy family on John street. Police Tickets The City of McHenry Police department has issued the following citations. Edward A.
