EARL WALSI So I Hear It was like old home week in Bolger's as we met Walter Carey (upfrom Florida), the Harold Phalins and the Jim Mahoneys. Harold's tan prompted me to ask if he got it on the golf course. Wrong guess. Suspect he got it in his garden. His pleasant wife let me know they read the Plaindealer regularly way over in Waukegan. Jim said he is in my class as a driver. A man with a star pulled him over for driving loo slowly - 45 in a 55 mile zone. Frustration is -- writing down some little gem of a thought, then forgetting to look at your notes. Had a chat with Bill Creutz, a Florida McHenryite, and asked about the many who attend those now famous picnics each year. Bill says there would be a crowd of 200 if they could get the whole group together. Joe Wagner told me when the season started that the Cubs would finish in last place. Coming from a dyed-in- the-wool Cub fan, we thought he was just whistlin' Dixie. Met Joe at the Longhorn and he reminded me of his prediction. Oh, no, Joe- Say it isn't so! The Republican con vention wasn't without some humor. While the keynote speaker was referring to the Titanic sinking while some aboard slept, a camera focused on one old fellow with his head hanging down on his chest. Who needs Sominex when oratory will do the job? TV reporters were busy trying to put words in the mouths of delegates and acted like prosecuting at torneys as they went goofy looking for a scoop. Quite a show the GOP put on. Now, let's see if the Democrats can top it. What happend to all the old coins? Never see a collection keeper these days. We seem to have more pennies than any other kind of money since parking meters are not in operation. As a clearing house, we scored again. Art Boger is going to advise Joanne Houghton about hum mingbirds. Those perky little Pom- Pon girls of McHenry High put on a car wash Saturday in the Plaindealer parking lot and did a real good job. You have to like young people like those girls. - Reading Carol Cooney's pinch hit job for Liz Nolan in Divot Dolls, and her ob servation it was harder than playing the game, made me think. Many times readers have said, "I wish I could write So I Hear some week". When I give them the chance, they back off. Mostly Cub fans who would like to blast me. Maybe their expressions would be too strong for a nice, family newspaper. Sitting down to eat in a restaurant and having a fly buzzing around you must rate as one of lifes' worst encounters. You swing at the little buzzer and think he has been scared away only to And him zeroing in on you again. This time he takes a fancy to the top of your head. Next he shows a liking for salad dressing. That pesky little devil is enough to make a man swear. Who could condemn you if you let loose with a couple of choice selections. From Woodstock comes a call from Cousin Jim Walsh. He read our thistle report and had in mind that Charlie Harmsen was a thistle commissioner. Nope. Chtrriie was our Township Assessor -- and a highly respected member of our community. Nowadays, somebody in the dugout is designated to count the number of pitches tossed up to the plate. When certain pitchers have thrown so many, they are excused for the day. That's a lot of hooey. Most of them throw so many while warming up that they leave their game in the bullpen. My idea. Throw strikes and don't try to be so cute. Early Wynn used to drive me nuts the way he ran the count to 3 and 2 on batter after batter. But, who am I to argue with success? He won 300 games in the majors without anybody counting his pit ches. The Grand Finale Of K SUNDAY JULY Reserve Your Seats Now for this Spectacular Show! Weather doesn't seem to affect Dorothy Uyttebroeck as she putted right into the heart of the green and bir- died on No. 6.1 hear her mile long drives on the fairways are something to behold. Bernice Dolce drove for show and skillfully putted in for a par on No. 1. That's a tough hole to par. Then Marilyn Lang chipped one in on No. 8 and safely tucked one in for a par on No. 4. Dawn's putt on No. 6 was dead on line and holding till the ball fell in the hole, popped out and then in again! A miracle putt with lots of excitement!! Wait - that's not all! How many can finish a game by hitting a fairway shot to the course's putting green? So, it's just a touch of the wrist and back to green No. 9. Needless to say Dawn ended the day with a good score. Linda Myer had a spec tacular tee-off on No. 9 and finished up with some sensational drives. An up an coming Amy Alcott? PAGE 7 • PLAINDEALER • WEDNESDAY. JULY 23.1980 m ii / Fifty-nine "C" boats took part in the Eastern Regional championship Regatta this weekend on Pistakee Lake. The competition is sponsored by the inland Lake Yachting association and sailors from Iowa, Wisconsin, Indiana. Michigan and Illinois competed in five different races during the three days. Dave Koch of Pewaukee Lake, Wisconsin won the overall competition. Edith Nimsgren's chip in from the apron ran the ball right in for a NO putt on No. 7. No effort, just skill of good golfing. Shirley Montalbano made a tricky little bunker shot when her golf ball screamingly bounced out of the sand and landed safely near the green. Suspense is part of i he game you well know. Stroking in for a beautiful day of only 14 putts makes for an optimistic outlook for Roye Roadman's golfing this year. Carol Barnicle played a great game of golf with only 15 putts. Just a touch of the putter and you have that par. Joan Teichmiller, with a "wristy flake of the club", skillfully chipped with a NO putt and a par on No. 4. Girls this is her 2nd year. Ilavern Gregory just keeps on parring holes and No. 5 came off with an ever so smoothe putt. Libbly Johnson played a beautifully all day with that classic control of hers. Ending up with 31 nett, 15 putts, and parring No. 6 and No. 7. Long drives and precision putting is a must in good golf. With a difficult pitch of 15' Bernice Dolce chipped in, hit the flag and safely put one in. Georgette Lewis sent a sensational long second fairway drive on 7.
