Walz New York--If the fall TV season gets off on schedule, the three networks will lock horns in what may be the toughest three way battle to capture viewers in the history of the medium. Optimism usually sweeps through network row in New York and California at this time of year as the big three prepare to rollout their spanking new series, mini-series and movies. By November most of that op timism fades as each web begins to realize that there are weak links in their program schedules. Those series and mini-series which do well in the Nielsen race will spawn new male and female stars, resplendent with lots of press coverage and big bucks. Who will these new stars be? A few weeks ago, I was fortunate enough to screen most of the pilot episodes from the projected new fall network TV series. Here are my personal choices for stardom. ABC Although the network suffered through a mediocre season last year it should rebound in a big way between September and January. ABC's strength will come from its uproarious sit-coms. 'Bosom Bud- | dies.' 'It's A Living,' 'I'm A Big Girl Now' and 'Too Close For I Comfort.' 'Bosom Buddies' should make stars out of comedy duo Tom Hanks and Peter Scolari, while co-star Donna Dixon possesses the looks and talent to become as popular as Farrah Fawcett. Ann Jillian, who headlines as a waitress in 'It's A Living.' is a recent graduate of Broadway's Sugar Babies' and probably will supplant Suzanne Somers as ABC's hottest, jiggly. blonde bombshell. Danny Thomas should enjoy a new lease on life with 'I'm A Big Girl Now,' since his co-star will be the extremely popular Diana Canova of 'Soap.' In 'Too Close For Comfort' Lydia Cornell should emerge as that show's sex symbol. Yes. ABC is going back to the 'T and A' formula, but this time the program content legitimizes that strategy. These were the best set of sit-coms I have seen in years. CBS * The network is riding high in the saddle for now, but I'd be cautious if I were in the CBS program department. Some of their new series have potential but the writing had better be more interesting or 'Ladies Man,' 'Secrets of Midland Heights' and 'Magnum P.I.' will suffer. In 'Ladies Man.' Simone Griffeth and Louise Sorel are bankable stars Sorel is a polished veteran, while Griffeth is a looker with burgeoning acting ability. The people who brought you Dallas.' Lorimar, have spun 'Secrets of Midland Heights,' with a cast so large that it will be hard for any one individual to emerge a star. Lorenzo Lamas, Dan Zippi and Linda Groven- ro have a slight edge based on their speaking parts and experience. Magnum P.I.,' a detective show based in Hawaii, looks pretty good with Tom Selleck in the lead role as a private investigator. If Burt Rey nolds ever wanted to do a TV series again, he'd probably clone himself and rename his double Tom Selleck. Yep, the resemblance is that uncanny. * NBC The last-place web has, technical ly, already started it's new season with Speak Up America' and 'Games People Play.' Both should do fine until October when the competition really gets rough. Cyndy Garvey. Steve's lovely wife, could become a star if 'Games People Play' sustains an audience. The network does have two potential winners in 'Harper Valley PTA,' with veteran actress Barbara Eden in the title role, and 'Flamingo Road.' the other Lorimar inspired prime-time soap opera headlining the attractive duo of Mark Harmon and Morgan Fairchild. I have a particular fancy for Morgan since she plays all of her TV roles to the hilt, and if 'Flamingo Road' takes off, she could become Hollywood's most sought after talent.
