It's a group of people who get together and discuss their feelings. They talk about what helped them through their grief and what didn't help them It's a way of getting out all frustrations and anger without lashing out at a spouse or friends. During the time of this grief, spouses cannot be of too much support because they are huring so bad also. So Compassionate Friends helps to support a parent when it seems there is no one else around. Anyone interested in joining the group and reaching out to others are invited to join the meeting Oct. 9 at 7 p.m. at the United Methodist church in Woodstock. . It\ MM I'll < <MM> sta f f psycho log is t news from the family Service and Mental Health Clinic ot McHemi Countj. (Editor's note: This is another in a series Kof especially written articles for McHenry County readers. Joseph Cools is a psychologist on the Family Service and Community Mental Health Center staff. This article is "Coping - Taking Care of Yourself".) Through our lives there are many people whom we h a v e " s e c o n d a r y " responsibility for: we are responsible--or share r e s p o n s i b i l i t y - - f o r o u r children; we may be par tially responsible for a spouse; we may assume some responsibility for our parents; or we may accept responsibility for a friend. There is, however, only one person whom we are totally, permanently, irrevocably responsible for: ourself. If we are able to lavish loving concern on our children, whom we have only partial and certainly not permanent responsibility for, doesn't it make sense to show the same concern and devotion to ourself? Taking care of yourself certainly does not mean' disregard for the feelings and rights of others; what it means is a fair and honest regard for your own feelings and rights. It does not mean ignoring the pain of others; it does mean taking care of your own pain. There is a popular fiction that implies that if you show too much concern for your own hap piness, you are self-serving and capricious. As a matter of fact if you take care of yourself and your own needs properly, you will have a great deal more energy and motivation to be able to give to others. Often it will appear that taking care of your own needs conflicts or interferes with the rights of others. Wi th rare exceptions requests (or demands) from other people do not have anything to do with their "rights'^ especially if you end up feeling resentful fulfilling their demands. Giving in to emotional blackmail and doing things out of guilt is not talcing'care ot yourself and also not taking care of anyone else. Take care of your own human needs and give to yourself the same privileges that you give to others. There will be plenty left over for other people and you will feel a* Jot better. S * * * * Most people are ready to take a chance if it costs them nothing. • * • • You can still make many friends by speaking nicely about people.
