The merchants of the city are cooperating and com­ bining their efforts to attract a large crowd of buyers to the city, where there will be many bargains offered. Listings of hundreds of these buys will be found in the advertising columns of next week's Plaindealer. Bob Peary, who, with his orchestra, has furnished music at the Fox Pavilion, McHenry, for the past three seasons, captured the title of Chicago's most popular orchestra in the finals at the Aragon Ballroom in Chicago. Bob was awarded a silver cup, $3,000 in gold and instruments for his band. Miss America (1930) was present as an added at­ traction. A dance sponsored by the McHenry Baseball club will be held at Stoffel's hall, West McHenry. The music will be furnished by Elmer Freund and his orchestra. FORTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of October 23, 1940) The Rev. James M. Gillis, editor of the Catholic World, and widely known as a radio preacher, calls for the defeat of Franklin D. Roosevelt in a vigorously worded article in the November issue of the publication. Father Gillis, one of the Paulist fathers, calls Mr. Roosevelt reckless, unpredictable and a psychological riddle, cites provisions of canon law against long tenure in office in warning of the dangers of a third term, and says: "We can stay out of war if, on Nov. 6, we vote Franklin D. Roosevelt out of office." Ground has been broken for a new home for Thomas Diedrich, who is to be married this week to Miss Marie Nett. The house will be situated at the south end of Park avenue. Mr. and Mrs. C.J. R e i h a n s p e r g e r a n d daughter, Joan, visited Herbert Reihansperger at Madison, Wis., where he is attending the university. TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of October 16, 1970) When deputies were checking the Burton's Bridge school on Route 176 they discovered that the upper school had been vandalized. The rooms were littered with fingerpaint, broken light bulbs, fluorescent lights and everything else that was available. There were fourteen windows broken on the north side of the school, where entry was made. Two typewriters- were smashed and two phonographs damaged. Damage was estimated at approximately $1,200. Twenty-five new members were received last week at Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran church. Mrs. Harold Steffan didn't travel far from home to catch a big 7'/fe pound walleye. She hauled her prize catch out of Powers Lake, Wis. The undefeated frosh-soph cross country team won a tough 24-35 victory of Libertyville and a run-away win over Lake Zurich by the perfect score of 15-50 in a double dual win. YMCA Seeks Members Donald Meyer, YMCA board of directors president, announced "During the month of October, the Lake Region YMCA will be having a 'construction special' membership campaign." "The long awaited ex­ pansion for the UMCA is well under way and scheduled to be finished this Spring. The addition will include racquetball courts, jogging track, exercise area, ad­ ditional parking and more office space." The membership special will be only for the month of October and for Family Activity and Adult Activity membership. These new member's membership expiration will be Dec. 15, 1981. DAV Services Benefit Veterans And Families Free assistance for local veterans and their families will be available when a Field Service unit of the Disabled American Veterans (DAV) visits Elgin on Oct. 21. This is the seventh consecutive year that one of these office- equipped vans has traveled to communities throughout the state, bringing free counseling and claims service to veterans and their families. The DAV Field Service unit will be located at the Elgin City Mall. These units are generally open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Fully qualified and trained DAV veterans' benefits experts will staff the traveling service facility. They can assist veterans and their families in filing claims for such federal and state benefits as disability compensation, pension, employment and job training programs, educational benefits, hospitalization and medical care, Social Security, death claims, and more. Veterans need not be members of the DAV to take advantage of this free ser­ vice. "Special emphasis is placed on Vietnam era veterans because many of these men and women aren't using the beneifts they've earned, some out of sheer distrust of the government that sent them to Southeast Asia to fight an unpopular war," said DAV National Commander Stan Pealer, himself a Vietnam era veteran. "It's surprising how many people don't even know about benefits they're en­ titled to by law until they step into one of our mobile offices," said DAV Executive Director Denvel D. Adams. Explaining the need for the program, Adams added, "Many veterans, dependents and widows live some distance from VA facilities where DAV services are available. Our Field Service unit program carries these services right to the door­ steps of these people." DAV officials urge veterans of all wars -- particularly disabled veterans - to take advantage of this free service by visiting the DAV mobile office to discuss any problems or questions they may have concerning veterans' benefits.
