The following items are taken from old issues of the Plaindealer found by Don Pedersen, 7611 Beach, Wonder Lake, when the attic of a Riverside drive home was being cleaned recently. Thirty-Eight Years Ago (From issues of the Plaindealer printed in April, 1942) Although the election of Tuesday, as expected, was not one of the biggest in the county's history, several hundred men and women in the local precincts alone went to the polls and declared themselves to favor either of the two major parties. Republicans had a big majority. In Precinct I, which in­ cludes Ringwood, 137 Republican and 22 Democratic votes were cast. For precinct com­ mitteeman, Earl Whiting received IS votes on the G.O.P. ticket and Sibre Whiting, 11 Democratic votes. Five hundred sixteen adults marked ballots, with 433 preferring the Republican ballot and only 38 the Democratic. In this precinct, Republican Harold Miller won over Robert Conway 283 to 143 for committeeman. In the fourth precinct, which takes in Johns burg, 239 votes were cast, 222 G.O.P. and 17 Democratic. Joe Frett, unopposed, received 185 G.O.P. votes for committeeman and Billy May won on the Democratic ticket. An unofficial total vote of 11,309 made up of 10,131 Republican and 1,178 Democratic votes were cast in the county Tuesday. This was 3,613 under the total vote of the 1940 primary. Senator C. Wayland Brooks ran through McHenry county Tuesday like a grass fire. He polled 7,401 votes as against 1,557 to his nearest opponent, Warren Wright. It was a typical Brooks vote in this county. Senator Brooks has always carried this county in his campaigns. Henry A. Nulle and Harold E. Reese almost duplicated their battle of eight years ago for the Republican nomination for sheriff Tuesday when the two candidates again staged one of those nip and tuck con­ tests. Nulle came out on top by the small margin of 73 votes, which is three less than he defeated Reese by eight years ago. Thomas A. Bolger is an apparent winner for the Democractic seat in the State House with 5,490 votes as against 3,822 for his op­ ponent Koziol. According to word received from national s e l e c t i v e s e r v i c e headquarters, men who registered Feb. 16 and whose numbers were drawn for draft classification March 17 will be£n to be inducted into the Army in May or June. Tower Hilt Instructor Teacher Of The Year A fourth grade teacher in the small, rural community of Tower Hill has been named the 1980-81 Illinois Teacher of the Year. Penny Edwards, who has taught at Shelby county's Tower Hill Elementary District 10 for eight years, was honored at the Illinois state board of education's "Those Who Excel" awards banquet in Springfield. A committee of educators selected Ms. Edwards from the eight finalists in the Oct. 26 teacher category. The "Those Who Excel" awards program honors individuals for their contributions to the state's K-12 education system, both public and nonpublic. Based on her philosphy of teaching, Edwards said, "Long after my students are grown, what they will remember about their teacher is how she taugit, more so than the facts she' taught." Erb Fund Benefit A benefit performance of the Powell family, of Champaign, 111. will be given at First Baptist church, 509 Front street, McHenry, at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 26. The gospel concert will be a benefit for the C. Edward Erb, Jr., Memorial fund for the Erb Memorial at First Baptist Church of McHenry. Mr. Erb was a well-known resident of McHenry and one of the founders of First Baptist church.
