Remembering When OLIVE FREUND (with long time subscribers) Mrs. Walter (Olive) Freund lives in an apartment above a local Main street tire store. The store was run for many years by her late, blind husband, Walter, and is operated now by her son, Roger. Living in the apartment for over SO years, Olive remembers a fire in 1925 that gutted the Peter Jus ten Furniture store across the street from the tire store. The furniture store was located where the school administration building stands today. She recalls that the fire started in the furniture store during the evening and a northeast wind was Mowing the heat and flames directly over her apartment. "Bob Thurlwell came to our back door and warned us about the fire," Olive said "He told us to crane to his house until the fire was put out." She said that as she led Walter down the street, she looked back to see her apartment roof had started on fire. "Before we left, I lit a blessed candle and put it in the front window," Olive recalled. "Upon returning we noticed all the windows from buildings close by were broken, but the one with the candle wasn't." Other things she remembered about the night included the volunteer fire truck coming too close to * the building and catching Are. She also remembered Pete Frett, a local butcher, who tried to warn the people in the apartment above the furniture store. As he kicked in the front door of the store, all the furniture in the front window burst into flames. Althoffs also had a store next to Jus ten's store, according to Olive. She said she saw one of the Althoff girls get out of their upstairs apartment by climbing over the roof. When Olive came back home the next day, she noticed that her apartment was still intact, but the diapers she had hanging in the back yard had bum holes in them. Justen later rebuilt the furniture store, according to Olive. "It was some exciting night," she concluded. Fellowship Women Hear' Speaker At Evening Meeting The Crystal Lake- McHenry Chapter Women's Aglow Fellowship will host an evening meeting Thursday, Nov. 6, 6:30 p.m., at John Evans Inn, Cryustal Lake, and guest speaker will be David Hawley of Williams Bay, Wis. Hawley is president of the Southern Lakes Full Gospel Business Men's Fellowship chapter in Lake Geneva and Chaplain of the Walworth County Jail.
