Lund-Publisher \ HiwsnnCl (Editor's Note: This is another article in the Today's Psychology weekly series of especially written articles for McHenry County readers. The topic this week is "Overcoming the Need For Approval II".) In last week's article, I discussed the destructive results that constantly demanding approval from others can have on one's life. Today I will be exploring the core belief which leads people to become approval addicts and I will give some guidelines concerning how to give up this erroneous belief. The belief I am talking about is the idea that your self-worth is based on whether or not people like you. By holding to this notion you give the people in your life incredible power over you. You give them control over your own feelings about yourself becoming a puppet on a string; willing to jump on command in order to Avoid those unpleasant H • ' ' feelings that come from low self-esteem. The antidote to this self- destructive attitude is to see that you do not need to base your self-worth on anything. You are a beautiful, loveable person just because you exist. No matter how you act or what others think of you, you can still see yourself as beautiful. Though your self-worth remains constant, it still makes sense to rate your actions. You can label a particular behavior as being wrong but never make yourself wrong. There is a world of difference between saying to yourself, "I'm really stupid for doing that" and saying, "that was a stupid thing to do, but I am beautiful, no matter what I do or what opinion people have about my behavior." In the first instance, you end up feeling lousy about yourself and your performance most likely x stays, the same or gets worse. The result of the second internal dialog is that you successfully correct the problem behavior and feel good about yourself the whole time. Hints and Tips: by the daily criminal activity reports we found the "paper hangers" were back at work. They are the people who write bad checks, the ones that we get back from the bank telling us that the accepted check is no longer active in its account. It could be N.S.F., non-sufficient funds, account closed or not by its maker (forgery). Remember, you pay twice when you accept the bad check. Know your endorser, get a telephone and credit card number and a vehicle license plate number, if possible. Traffic Hints and Tips: - We have investigated 1,706 traffic accidents with 20 fatalities so far this year, don't become another one, slow down.
