Pumpkins Provide Unusual Dishes IMSFtSH Because thoughtful friends have helped FISH secure the various items of furniture that were requested recently, a crib and play-pen has made a baby happy. There is still a need for a 30" gas stove, pots and pans for cooking and baking and bunk beds. Call FISH at 385- 0258, and arrangements will be made for pick up. This weekend will be a happy time for all the boys and girls, and following closely after Halloween is Thanksgiving. FISH is planning now to give food baskets for the needy in the community for that great family day. Everyone is invited to share in preparing them. Needy folks are recom mended to FISH by welfare, churches, county visiting nurses, headstart, township supervisors and various social agencies. Many of the families helped, later on assist in helping others. Non-perishable items are needed - canned fruits, vegetables, meats, cereals, juices and paper products, many other household necessities, as well as fresh meats, vegetables, fruits and desserts. Remember Senior Citizens, too, with items for that day! One can probably pur chase one or more items while doing regular weekly shopping. Deliveries will be made on Sunday, Nov. 23. Drivers are needed for that date, too. Call FISH to offer help. Members of a ladies or gentleman's group might want to have a Food Shower for FISH. If preferred, or easier, a check, money order or certificate from a super market may be mailed to FISH, P.O. Box 282, McHenry, 111., 60050. These help in securing the necessary fresh meat and vegetables. Smile - if you see someone without one, give him yours! M.G. Consumers can use fresh, pie pumpkin many ways, says Nancy Moore, Ex tension home economist. Jack o* lantern pumpkins are not good for cooking. Toasted pumpkin seeds make a nutritious snack, suggests Ms. Moore. Remove seeds from the pumpkin fiber. Add 1% teaspoons melted butter and 1V4 teaspoons salt to 2 cups of unwashed seeds. Spread the mixture in a shallow pan and toast in a 250 degree F oven until the seeds brown lightly - about 20 minutes. Also the pumpkin can be washed, cut up, cooked and sieved-ready to use in a pumpkin pie. You can freeze the prepared pumpkin in pie- sized quantities for Christmas use. "The pumpkin's yellow flesh is an excellent vitamin A source for you and your family," explains Ms. Moore. To add variety to your vegetable menu, Ms Moore suggests mixing mashed pumpkin and sliced cooked carrots. Use pumpkin in other dishes such as pum pkin soup, pumpkin pudding, pumpkin bread and pumpkin cake. As the merry guests sing this happy refrain, the bride, her hand steadied by her new husband, cuts the first slice of the tiered white wedding cake. This time honored tradition is meant to insure their happiness. For almost as long as there have been weddings, there have been wedding cakes surrounded by all sorts of romantic traditions. In the time of the ancient Romans, the wedding cake was broken over the head of the bride, its crumbs collected by the guests as tokens of good luck. In merry medieval England, the bride and groom tried to kiss over a (Hie of tiny wedding cakes brought to the ceremony by their guests, and heaped together in the middle of the table. They were supposed to kiss without disturbing the pile of goodies! In an attempt to make this tradition less of an obstacle, an itinerant French baker put all the ckaes together and iced them as one, thereby giving birth to the much admired tiered wedding cake. A piece of this treasured confection, under the pillow of an unmarried girl will induce dreams of her future groom. With informal weddings growing in number, many young women now bake their own wedding cakes, lovingly made and trimmed with garlands of flowers, stars, lovebirds and cupids, un failingly topped with a miniature bride and groom. PAGE 3 • PLAINDE ALER - WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 2». HMO BUDDY'S WORKSHOP Reducing Huge Heating Bills Winter bjnst mud the comer. How can we red net the HUM beating bids we received Inst year? The following are some low cost ideas that can help you to cut your home fuel bills. First seal the cracks around the doors and windows with caulking ami weather-stripping. Cover your windows and doors. If storm windows are top expensive, use plastic. The plastic can be attached to the window frame, taped to the screen, or put in a separate frame made for the window. If outside doors do not fit tightly at the bottom, make a "draft stopper" to keep cold air out and warm air in. A towel or scatter rug shoved against the crack at the bottom of the door will be effective. Or, you can make a draft stopper by sewing together a tube made out of close-woven fabric. Fill it with sand and place against the cracks. A fireplace without a damper sends a lot of warm air up the chimney when no fire is burning. Make a cover out of sheet metal to stand in front of the opening when the fireplace is not in use. Enclose the foundation or crawl space around your home. Use plastic siding, roofing, or any other material that will pre vent wind from blowing under the floor. If you completely seal your crawl space, check it periodically to see if it is beginning to feel damp. If so, ventilate the space to reduce moisture. NOW OPEN!
