IVUJLKli .'»l\l*ISALER - WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 29,1*80 THE ASSAULT-closes in on Warrior quarterback Sean Haley as he looks for an open receiver after a high snap on the extra point attempt forced him to pass for the two points. Haley'* pass was incomplete in the second quarter play, but McHenry still led at the time, 1J4, over Jaeebs. The Warriors eventually won their home finale, 19-6 over the Golden Eagles. STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAYLORD Plaindealer McHenry Triumphs, The McHenry Warriors evened their season record to 4-4 and 2-4 in the Fox Valley with a win over Jacobs Friday night. The Warriors played one of their better games of the season, winning 19-6 and sending the Eagles down to their eighth straight defeat. It indeed was a cold and windy night, indicated bv the small turnout to witness the last home game of the Warriors this season. The Warrior defense met the challenge time and time again as the Eagles tried to notch their first win of the season. At one time in the third period, the Eagles ran off 17 plays, but could not get into paydirt. The Warrior offense ran off just 13 plays in the final half of the game. The Warriors won the toss and chose to receive. Not wanting to kick to D'Angelo, who has ran back three kickoffs this season, the Eagles tried an on-side kick that the Warriors recovered on the Eagles 44. Five plays later at 9:31, Rob Kalck raced 36 yards for the touchdown, and when Haley kicked the PAT the Warriors led 7-0. After an exchange of Knts, the Eagles marched to midfield, where the Warriors Id. A punt to the Warrior 25 gave the locals the ball. Four plays later, Kelly Gartner punted into a stiff wind and managed a mere 7-yard kick. The Eagles got to the 15, and then Jeff Brock went off tackle for the T.D. at 2:46. The PAT failed and the Warriors led 7-6. That was the score as the first period ended. With the ball on the Warrior 27 on the first play of the second period, Keith Belzer hit Jim Doessel on a screen pass and the speedy Warrior back went to the 44. Rob Kalck broke loose to the Jacbos 20. Kalck and Doessel ran the ball to the Jacobs 4, but then Belzer was hit for a 19-yard loss, bringing the ball back to the 23. Then a little bit of the old dipsy-doodle came into play. Tim Klapperich, from his split end position, came around on what looked like a reverse, stopped and passed to Rob Kalck who carried it into the endzone for another Warrior score. The PAT failed, and the Warriors led 13-6 with 7:43 remaining in the half. Neither team could generate much of an offense the rest of the period, but late in the quarter the Warriors had the ball on Jacobs 38, but four incomplete passes failed as the half ended with the Warriors ahead 13 to 6. Early in the third period, Vic Betancourt intercepted a Eagle pass and a personal foul added 15 more vards to the Eagles 41. The Eagles held and took over on the 35. Then the Warrior defense was tested. With Brock and Mugler carrying the mail, and Martinsen the Eagle field general hitting his receivers for short passes, the Eagles marched to the Warrior Fox Valley Standings FOX VALLEY CONFERENCE FOOTBALL Team W 1 pts opp overall Cary Grove 6 0 176 79 7 1 Woodstock 5 1 187 93 7 1 Crystal LakeC. 4 2 108 47 6 2 Crystal LakeS. 4 2 230 98 4 4 McHenry 2 4 119 115 4 4 Crown 2 4 41 145 2 6 Dundee 1 5 37 190 1 7 Jacobs 0 6 27 116 0 8 SCORING Name, School td pat-l pat-2 tp Bob Jewell, C.L.S. 17 1 104 Brad Downing, Wood. 9 1 56 J. Jack Jablonski and Rob Kalck teamed up to throw Mugler for a 10-yard loss as the period ended. On the first play of the final period Vic Betancourt grabbed his second interception of the night and ran back to the Jacobs 17, to snuff out a Eagle rally. The Eagle defense held and the Warriors again punted to the 49. The Eagles brought the ball to the Warrior 40, where it was fourth down and three to go. Coach Bob Bejcek elected to go for it. It should be noted the Eagles had the wind at their back, trailing 13 to 6 with about five mintues to play. The Warriors held and took over on their own 40. On the first play Dave D'Angelo on a reverse ran 60 yards untouched for the final Warrior score. The PAT failed and the Warriors had it wrapped up for a 19-6 win with a little over four mintues remaining. After the Warrior kickoff, Scott Schmitt picked off a Eagle pass; and the Warriors ran out the clock for the victory. Many veteran observers in the press box could not understand Coach Bejcek's thinking on not putting in a close game especially with the wind at his back, and the field slippery and wet, along with it being bitter cold for the Warrior receivers. Anyhow, it backfired and the Warriors took advantage of it to insure a victory. Coach Schlender was quite pleased with the performance of his squad. A win next Saturday over Crown will insure the Warriors of a winning season, one of their early season goals. Johnsburg Drowns, 27-6 Prep Round-up "We live and die by the pass, so when it's rainy, cold and windy, there is not too much you can do." Coach Bob Schmitt summed up his Johnsburg Skyhawks fifth loss of the season, a 27-6 drowning at Salem Central last Friday night. Salem Central racked up only 15 yards in the air, while Skyhawk quarterbacks teamed up for no yardage in eight total passes, but the difference showed on the ground, where Johnsburg gained 109 to Salem's 354. The only Skyhawk touch down came in the early goings of the fourth quarter. A three yard run by Pete Barosso capped off a 70-yard drive utilizing"^ IhixtUre of end sweeps and off-tackle trap plays. The damage was already done, however, as Salem scored all 27 of its points in the first three quarters. At 9:30 of the first quarter, a Salem 47-yard run highlighted an 80-yard drive to give Salem an early 6-0 lead. The extra point failed. At the 10:44 mark of the second period, Salem again scored on a two-yard run and the extra point failed once again. On a fake punt, Salem then scored on a 15-yard pass with 1:07 left in the half, while a safety only added to the humility minutes before the fake punt as punter Rob Schmidt fumbled a bad snap in the end zone. The score stood at 20-0 at half time. Central added an 11-yard jaunt in the third period as the icing on the cake put their record at 3-5 on the season and set Johnsburg's season totals also at 3-5. Schmitt explained that Salem was a "very physical team" and that the Skyhawks were unable to stop the off-tackle running. Next week, Johnsburg will "go basically with what we got" as they meet Shark Conference leader Marengo at Marengo on Friday. "We'll need to out-quick 'em and out-run 'em to do harm to Marengo," Schmitt said. "It's too late to change now."
