Your eyes water, the smoke is offensive and you're labelled a killjoy if you complain. Now, there is evidence that the non-smoker's plight has health-affecting ramifications. Science magazine reports a study done at the University of California at Dan Diego which concluded that non-smokers exposed to tobacco smoke experience a lower breathing capacity than non-smokers working in a smoke-free environment. The researchers tested 2,100 men and women from the San Diego area by measuring the rates at which they could force air out of their lungs. They found an average 10 percent lower exhalation rate among the non-smokers exposed to smoke-filled atmospheres over a 20-year period. These exposed non- smokers had the breathing capacity of a person who smoked up to 10 cigarettes a • day This does not prove that one can acquire diseases such as emphysema or lung cancer just by inhaling someone else's smoke. But it does show that non-smokers working in a smoke-filled environment suffer the same kind of damage to small airways deep inside the lungs as do smokers. The damage is in the form of mucous and scar tissue, which block the smooth flow of air and can inhibit the transfer of oxygen into the bloodstream, according to the report. Nearly 75 percent . of employers in the U.S. allow unrestricted smoking on their premises. Lawsuits regarding this have generally been settled out of court. However, one judge, confronted by a decision on the issue found that smoking was prohibited in the company's computer room because the smoke caused the machinery to malfunc tion.
