FURRY AND FEATHERED FRIENDS Pets make the holidays merry This holiday season you needn't look any further than your neighborhood pet shop for a menagerie of great gift ideas for everyone on your shopping list. Before buying a pet, how ever, the Pet Information Bureau reminds gift-givers to make sure the animal will be a welcomed gift, and not seen as a burden by the re cipient. Also, consider the lifestyle of the prospective pet owner. Someone who is al ways on the go will be more in tune with pets that are fairly independent, like snakes or fish, rather than with a demanding puppy or kitten. Yet if the individual wants a pet for companion ship, a dog, cat or bird would be most desirable, more suitable than, say, a tarantu la or hermit crab. Also, give some thought to the pet's future living quar ters. A hamster or other similarly caged pet will be fine for any sized house or apartment But a Saint Ber nard may pose problems to an apartment dweller. Many apartments and condomini ums restrict pets entirely. Fish keeping is one of America's most relaxing Twos FRIDAY, OCTOBER 31. IfM hobbies. It can be as easy as maintaining a tank filled with several hardy varieties of goldfish or as involved as raising more exotic species. Most pet shops stock a varie ty of aquarium setups, in cluding tank, gravel, pump, filters and heaters. After you've purchased a tank and accessories for the "fishy" person on your list, why not include a "fish certificate," enabling the individual to make a trip to the pet shop and personally select the fish he wants? Dogs always take the lead in the pet parade, and it's easy to see why. The idea of owning a puppy or dog appeals to just about every one. Children love the soft fur and playful manner of a dog, while adults find that dogs make great compan ions. There are scores of breeds to choose from, each offering a temperament and physique which you can match to the personality and lifestyle of the gift-getter. Some breeds have special eating requirements, others don't. Some dogs can be more easily trained than others. What's important is that you choose a dog suit able for the intended owner's needs. Kittens are especially ap pealing because of their in quisitive natures and cuddly behavior. Cats do not de mand as much of their own ers' time as do dogs, they're perfectly content to stay at home by themselves during the day and can even be left alone for as long as a week end. There is an enormous va riety of cats to choose from, ranging from pedigreed Per sians to typical tabbies. Knowledgeable pet shop per sonnel will be able to assist in your cat selection and can give advice on feeding and care. Birds are cheerful Christ mas gifts that continue to spread good tidings through out the year. While music lovers will enjoy the con certs provided by canaries, others will exclaim in de light over the beauty of a scarlet macaw or have in teresting "conversations" with an Amazon parrot. Bird-givers should consult reputable breeders or pet shops for cages proportioned to the wing span of the cho sen breed. Information con cerning a bird's habits and diet requirements is also available at pet shops. According to the Pet In formation Bureau, it's esti mated that at least 24 mil lion hamsters will join households this year -- most of them during the Christ mas holidays. The majority of these hamster owners are children and, while hamsters do make great first-time pets for kids, these diminu tive, furry creatures are be coming increasingly popular with people on the go and those who live in apartments and condominiums. Much of a hamster's appeal stems from its small size, natural cleanliness and gentle man ner. In addition, they are cu rious, friendly and playful. In their natural habitat, hamsters are clean and well- groomed. Easily domesticated, hamsters quickly adapt to new environments. Whatever may be the pet particulars of those on your holiday shopping list, you're more than likely to find a gift to fit the bill at your neighborhood pet shop. And, while you're there, trained personnel will be able to ex plain all the necessary dietary requirements and accessories needed to keep the pet happy all year long!
