A New System Is Needed Consistency is something that any newspaper should strive towards. Nothing is more frustrating for the reader than to see a story on his team which covers three inches of copy, then to look over two columns to find a story about the neighboring school that is 20 inches in length. A slight case of favoritism? I don't believe so. It could be, however, that the neighboring school that "gets all the coverage" has sent in the copy and has taken the time to boast about his team. As a newspaper sports editor, my job is to gather the local sports information, edit the copy, take the pictures and present it to the public as a cohesive unit. Another part of my job is to decide which sports are of most interest to the biggest audience and to center my reporting efforts around those sports. For example, cross Skiing, Spiking Clinics Underway The City of McHenry Dept. of Parks and Recreation is now taking registration for its Womens' Volleyball league. Late Lesson All too many of us wake up along about midway in our lives to a realization that it's one of those do-it-yourself deals. -Globe, Mason City, la. place on Thursday, Nov. at 7:30 pm with the winners of the two Tuesday games vying for the championship. McHenry is presently 6-7 in the Fox Valley Con ference. If either McHenry or Johnsburg advances to the Sectionals, play will begin Nov. 24, when McHenry would travel again to the Belvidere Sectionals and Johnsburg would advance to the Chicago (Luther South) Sectional. Super-sectional play will begin Dec. 1 for both Class A and AA, with the state finals commencing on Dec. 4-6 at Horton Fieldhouse on the Illinois State University campus. Marian To Host District Tourney The Marian Central Hurricanes, who have had an up and down season under Mary Stoner, will host the volleyball Districts starting Nov. 18. The Hurricanes have finished their regular season over a week ago and have used the last week to prepare for the upcoming Districts. In match one on Tuesday, Hampshire will take on Alden-Hebron at 6:30 pm while the following match will see Huntley take on Marengo. On Wednesday, Nov. 19, the Hurricanes will face the winner of Hampshire-Alden- Hebron at 6:30 and Rich mond-Burton will take on the winner of the Huntley- Marengo match. The victors of the two Nov. 19 games will lock horns on Friday, Nov. 21 at 7:30 pm for the championship. If Marian can advance, they will go to Hampshire for sectional action in a bid to travel to Lisle on Dec. 1 for the Super-sectionals. country will not get as much coverage as football because of the level of interest by a bigger audience. Gathering the information is the hardest part of my job, and in this area is where I need your help. A one-man sports section is uncapable of getting all the news that interests all the people. It's that simple. In an effort to bolster my "gathering capacity," I have developed a system that should help to fairly represent grade school, high school and other miscellaneous sports. It works like this. I have formulated a "Sports Fact Sheet" for each sport that I could think of that needs attention on the Plaindealer sports pages. The fill-in-the-blank format is easy to fill out and covers the major points of any athletic event. These forms will be sent to area coaches to be filled out after (or during) each contest. Spots for coaches and player comments and game highlights will be included so that a personal * approach can be achieved. This form should be sent directly to my office by messenger, mail, or dropped in the handy slot in the front of the Plaindealer by 10:30 am Monday (for Wednesday paper) or 10:30 Wednesday (for the Friday paper). From this sheet of facts, I can write a fair, accurate story with no strings attached... but only if the sheet is turned in. There are too many sports in McHenry and Johnsburg to spend days on the phone in gathering information. Mail is the newspapers best friend, especially when working with such a small staff. If you are interested in accumulating information for your particular sport, please give me a call or come in to see me so I can give you the necessary fact sheets. Also, If you know of a big event that I possibly do not know about, please give me a call and I may be able to cover it. It's too late for pictures the day after the event. Thank you for your cooperation in an attempt to keep sports in the proper perspective in McHenry. On The Sideline With Dick Rabbitt The two Fox Valley representatives in the football playoffs have fallen by the wayside thanks to Wheaton North high school. In the first game of the playoffs Wheaton walloped Woodstock 42-6, and then on Saturday, defeated Cary Grove 34-6. Injuries to two key Trojans, Brennan the tight end and safety along with their leading rusher Joe Mack. The fact that quarterback Neil Britt was playing with a broken bone in his foot hampered the Trojans, but I don't think even a healthy Trojan team could have beaten the Wheaton eleven. Wheaton is the defending 4-A champ and has won 23 games in a row. They play DeKalb Saturday at Huskie stadium in what may be the championship game. With the addition of a sixth class this year, the Chicago Catholic league has a representative in the semi-finals in both class 6-A and 5-A. This is going to bring a howl from some downstate schools. There is a possibility that each could win its class championship. With two teams from the same conference winning championships, if they do, you can see why a lot of schools are going to be upset. Rockford West is the only non Chicago area school in the top two classes that is not from the so-called Chicago area, playing in the semi-finals this weekend. If the I.H.S.A. could add another class to its football program, I am still wondering why it won't add another class in basketball. There is a large gap from the break off point of 750 students in basketball to Gordon Tech with an enrollment of over 5,000. A breakoff from 750 to anywhere between 1,400 and 1,800 would give a lot more schools a chance for a championship. Other states have been doing this for years. Winter sports are just around the corner. The girls' volleyball team finished regular season play yesterday, and will now await tournament play. The girl swimmers will finish up in the near future, and then comes wrestling, basketball and boys swimming along with badminton. We hope by next week to give you a rundown on the Warriors for the coming season. Coach Ken Ludwig has had his squad working all last week in preparation for the Sycamore tourney over the Thanksgiving holiday. They meet DeKalb in the first game. Some new coaching changes at McHenry High this season, some new, some familiar only in different positions. Bill Blankenhorn can't be satisfied to take it easy will coach the boys' sophomore basketball team. Pat Wirtz will move from sophomore basketball to become the head coach of the girls' basketball team, while a newcomer to the staff Karen Wheeler will coach the frosh- soph. Jeff Varda another newcomer will coach the boys' frosh B team, while Brian Wilson will move up to J.V. wrestling coach, and Jerry Rankin will coach the frosh. Swimming coach Mike Shanahan will have some help this season when Linda Usrey another newcomer will coach the frosh- soph. Ken Ludwig will have El Partenheimer at his side again this season, Marty Sobczak will head the wrestlers, and Jean Natoili will have charge of badminton. Ken Mueller will move up to boys freshmen coach. 2 2500 N. Chapel Hill Rd. "THE HOME OF THE ATHLETE" McHEHRT COUNTY'S LARGEST NIKE DEALER! Comment On Sports FOOTBALL * * * * By Pete Fritch'e WASHINGTON, D. C. « Bart Starr, his job reportedly hanging by a thread, might have turned things around just in time in the National Conference's central divi sion. And, believe it or not, the Green Bay Packers could still win in their division. The Detroit Lions defeat of Oct. 26 made that quite possible, and Green Bay's win over the Vikings that week left Starr's chargers only a game and a tie back. Even before the end of Oc tober, one got the feeling the Packers might be turning things around. They had thoroughly outplayed the Tampa Bay Bucs, even though they only got a tie. If the Pack can come back, even as the mighty Steelers seem to be falling, those two turnabouts would be among the biggest pro football news of the 1980-81 season. That and the surpris ing showing of now-mighty Buffalo, and tough Phila delphia. At halfway point, as November began, the cur rent season was becoming one of the more interesting in recent years, especially with Atlanta challenging Los Angeles and so many teams looking better than last sea son. The current low points are in New York-both the Giants and Jets-and New Orleans, where the Saints need help badly. In just about every other pro city, however, the representative team is capable of beating or upsetting any foe on a given Sunday. All Free School bulletin board: "Free.
