A.The major reasons are that belonging to a new conference would require us to travel long distances. The longest distance we now travel in the Fox Valley is about 16 miles. This is very important with the high cost of gasoline. Another reason is that the Fox Valley is now one of the finest conferences in Illinois. For example, this fall the conference had two football teams qualify for the State Playoffs. In golf, the first and eighth place schools in the State Tournament were from the Fox Valley. Q. About how long will 11 take before our schools are big enough to have separate athletic teams in the Fox Valley Conference? A. It all depends upon how rapidly our community grows. If the economy does not get better and our community grows very little, as has been the case for the past couple of years, our schools will probably get smaller in the next few years. Q. How much smaller would we be? A. A study done by the School Board shows that enrollments could be as low as 1,517 students by the 1964-85 school year, 80 less students than we have this year, if the community doesn't grow. Q. What will we do while we are waiting for our enrollments to itrease? Road 5-8899 McHenry McHenry Eliminated In Belvidere District PAGEf -PLAINDEALER - FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 21,1980 Plaindealer In District volleyball action, the McHenry Warrior spikers travelled to Belvidere Tuesday night and ended their season in losing two games in row to host Belvidere. Coach Pam Shaffer took her 10-11 Warriors, led bty all-conference pick Pam West, into the first game using the same lineup she has used all year. They were handled easily, 15-3. Shaffer decided to change things around a bit in the second game of the two-out- of-three match. "We mixed up players in the second game, and we did rather well," she said. "But not well enough, I guess." McHenry lost the second game, 16-14, as Belvidere advanced to the District finals on Thursday Shaffer admitted that Belvidere was going to be tough to beat. "Belvidere is a tough team," she said. "At one point, one of their girls served 12 straight points against us." Over in Johnsburg, Walther Lutheran and St. Edwards met head on at 7 pm on Tuesday, as Walther Lutheran advanced in two games, 15-11 and 15-9. The win for Walther Lutheran put its season record at 8-12. The Skyhawk spikers sat in the stands and watched the battle as they await a Thursday clash in hopes of advancing. It was an unusual sight to see a total of about three spectators at the District play, but Johnsburg Athletic Director Jim Meyers ex plained why. "The playoff system is kind of screwy because the team that had the least travel to get here still had to come 35 miles." When asked about the phenomena, the Walther Lutheran coach said, "I have a hard enough time getting my team here, much less the fans." EMPTY STANDS-were avoided only because the Johnsburg Skyhawk volleyball team was "scouting" the opponents in the opening day of Districts action at Johnsburg. Above. St. Eds and Walther Lutheran battled it out as All-Conference For Pam West The Third Q. Why is it going to take that long before each school can have its own teams? A. The major reason is that the size of our schools is now too small. We want to remain in the Fox Valley Conference after we split. If we split now, our schools would be too small to be competitive in the conference. We need to grow first before we can decide to split the athletic program. Note: This seems to concur with the comments of most of the coaches surveyed, who wanted to stay in the Fox Valley Conference and stay competitive. Joel Wakitsch Sports Editor Q. If we split the program now, just how much smaller would East and West be than the other schools in the conference? STAFF PHOTO-JOEL WAKITSCH Pam West was the lone McHenry player on the Fox Valley All-conference volleyball team. West will return next year for the Warriors. STAFF PHOTO-JOEL WAKITSCH A. We will continue to compete as one school in the Fox Valley Conference as we are now doing. Q. Are we permitted to do this? A.Yes. The Illinois High School Association (MSA) permits us to hold one membership and to compete as one school. Officials of the Fox Valley Conference understand our situation and want us to remain as a member now as well as when we split our athletic program. Q. What can the School Board do while waiting for the Schools to increase in size? A. The School Board is planning to appoint a committee of coaches, administrators, and students to study how big our schools should be before the split is made. The committee will also study what sports we should compete in when the split is made, taking into account our facilities and the number of coaches available. This committee will make suggestions to the School Board at the end of this school year. Note: This committee, according to the Board, will consist of 12 people directly related to the school including the Superintendent, both Building Principals, the Athletic Director, three head coaches, one Board of Education member, one Booster Club member, two student council members, and one faculty member representing the non- athletic in terse holas tic program. Q. While we are still one athletic program, is there a possibility that some of the varsity games and practices will be moved to East now that it has been fixed up? A. Yes. Now that the gymnasiums and locker rooms have been remodeled, the School Board would like to see some varsity level games held at East. The committee will also be studying this to see what games could be moved from West. The School Board seems to be taking a rather systematic approach to the situation, and it looks like a decision to split the athletic programs will first have to slash its way through red tape and committees before it can become a reality. There are a few contradictions, however. The Board says that (me of the main reasons that it split into two, four year schools was to develop "individual school identities," but with one sports program this goal is unachievable. It makes one wonder why this committee wasn't formed long before McHenry decided to split. Why decisions concerning the future of athletics didn't coincide with the decision to make two, four year schools. Somewhere along the line, a division between academics and athletics has taken place, which has caused concern and confusion among students, teachers and fans. I just hope this proposed Interscholastic Program Study Committee can do something to relieve the "splitting headache." only the official scorers (lower right) and the Johnsburg team, (upper left ) watched the action. Walther Lutheran won this match 15-11, 15-t and advanced in District play. Pam West a junior spiker on Pam Shaffer's McHenry High volleyball team was selected to the all- conference team by the coaches on Monday night at Crystal Lake. The 5'4" spiker was the spark plug of the fifth place Warriors as they finished their regular season play With a 10 and 11 record. This it a great improvement from die 4 and 17 record of last season. Coach Pam Shaffer had CGME TO THE BIGGEST CAMUAC-PONTIAC DEALER IN THE "COUNTY" The Splitting Headache: Part Three From part one and two of my series on the possible split Of McHenry High School's athletic program, it became quite apparent that the public likes it the way it is now, and that the coaches don't think that this is the time to split the program, although many agreed that it should be done in the future. For those of you who agree with the above suggestions, you'll be glad to know the position of the District 156 School Board. At a meeting held Tuesday, the School Board issued a statement, in the form of questions and answers, that indicated its present opinion on the situation. For the sake of accuracy, the Boards' statement will be presented to you as it was presented at the meeting. I have inserted some background in some cases as a rebuttal to each answer. A. This year, East has 855 students and West has 742 students. The next smallest school in the conference would be Jacobs High School with 1,006 students. Crystal Lake Central High School would be the biggest with 1,418 students. Note: When Crystal Lake High School split a'teW years ago, it was obvious that both schools could compete in the Fox Valley after splitting. The total enrollment of Crystal Lake was about 2700 at the time of the split. The present enrollment of Crystal Lake South is 1314. Q. Does this mean that we are now the biggest school in the Fox Valley Conference? A. Yes, we are. If we split now, we would go from the largest to the two smallest. Q. Couldn't we then join another conference if we wanted to split our teams sooner? A. Yes, we could probably join another conference made up of smaller schools if we wanted to. But we don't want to do this. •RENT OPTIONS •SALT DELIVERY •SALT SALE Service All Makes 385-3093 3607 CHAPEL HILL ROAD McHENRY.
