PAGE • - PLAINDEALER • WEDNESDAY. DECEMBER It. 19M Weekend For Warriors Romp In FVC Opener The McHenry Warriors opened their FVC season with a 75 to 61 win over the Cary Grove Trojans. The victory was not as easy as the score indicates, as the Warriors had to shrug off a first period slump to gain this win. After a Bob Zeller basket tied the game at 2 all with 7:00 ; in the initial period, the Warriors hit a drought, and the Trojans ran off 12 unanswered points for a whooping 14 to 2 i with 2:30 left in the period. The remaining time saw both ims play even basketball, and the Trojans led 22 to 10. In the second period, the dymanic duo of Bob Greve and Bpb Zeller began to find the range, with Greve's 13 and Zeller's 10 points. The Warriors crept ahead and led at the intermission 39 to 36 In the third period Greve and Zeller along with help from Mik» Burgdorf enabled the Warriors to increase their margin to a 56 to 46 margin. The final period saw Zeller and John Costigan hit the net and the Warriors walked off with their first conference win 75 to 61. Trailing 14 to 2 in the early going, the Warriors could have laid down and died, but they fought bade and in a period of four minutes overcame the huge Trojan lead. The Warriors have to fight and scrap for every ball. Impressive in the win over the Trojans was the fine play of forward John Costigan. The senior forward is all over the floor, hustling and scrapping every minute, and is a thorn in the side of the opposition. Bob Greve with 30 points and Bob Zeller with 27 led all scorers, and put them in the top two places in conference scoring for the season. On the inbound play Bauml was fouled, and sunk the first of a one and one to insure the Warrior victory. The Warriors led all the way until the final minute, when Grant took a 61 to 60 margin to set the stage for the Warrior comeback. It was a double pleasure for Ken Ludwig and Ins Warriors because his high scoring duo of Zeller and Greve wore both on the bench, having been expelled with five fouls. With Greve, Zeller and Costigan hitting the hoop the Warriors had a narrow 18 to 17 margin at the end of the first period. With Zeller hitting two quick baskets, and Costigan, and Mike Burgdorf splitting the net the Warriors jumped out 28 to 22, and Bill Boeka's two baskets gave the Warriors the biggest lead of the night 32 to 22, before Grant rallied to narrow the gap 34 to 28 at the intermission. Two Zeller baskets put the Warriors up by eight, 38 to 30, and Costigan's bucket at 1:15 gave the Warriors a 46 to 40 margin, before Grant once again rallied to narrow the gap to two, 46 to 44, at the period. The final period saw the Warriors maintain their lead until Hopkins made two baskets from underneath at l: 15 to put the Bulldogs ahead for the first time in the game. With both Bob Zeller and Bob Greve on the bench, John Costigan took over the leadership of the Warriors, and after Grant went ahead 63 to 60, the young redheaded senior hit a 10- footer, and came bade with 12 seconds remaining for a heroic 20-foot jumper to give the Warriors the lead once again. Bauml's free throw insured the victory. Again it was a fired up scrappy Warrior crew that edged out a win. They make a lot of mistakes and fouled a lot, but indeed they hustle and scrap. Costigan's 19 points led the Warriors, Zeller had 16 and Greve 14. Friday night, the Warriors travel to Jacobs who were beaten by Crystal Lake Central in overtime last Friday night 52 to 49. In the Cary game the young Warriors jumped out to an early 19 to 0 lead and coasted in for the win. Mike Bauml had 16 points to lead the Warriors. In the Grant game it was a nip-and-tuck game most of the way, but the Warriors held on in the closing minutes for the victory. Bauml again led the scoring with 18 points. Neiss, who led all scorers with 28, tallied 12 of his points on free throws in the second half as the North Boone squad turned the game into a wrestling match. The game wasn't always as lop-sided as the final score dictated as North Boone used its size to its advantage in the first half and trailed at the in termission, 28-22. The first half found only one Skyhawk with the hot hand as Tom Pieper made some long ones and a few breakaway layups in collecting 11 points. For the most part, however, Johnsburg was limited to only one shot at the basket while the 6' 1" plus North Boone five continually grabbed the defensive rebounds. Johnsburg started the game out with the up- perhand, leading 10-5 at the three minute mark of the first period and climbed to 14-6 at the end of the quarter. The second quarter was a different story. A number of missed layups and mental mistakes negated the fine passing of Russ Beck. The Johnsburg strategy included Rick Neiss working the cleared-out weak side against North Boone's Brian Crull. The one-on-one had limited effectiveness, as Crull held his ground on the driving Neiss, allowing Neiss to force bad shots and collect two offensive fouls in tallying only 6 first-half points. The last minutetof the first half set the pace for the second half as turnover after turnover by both clubs led to flying bodies and no points scored. Football type passes and sloppy play was halted by the timely buzzer and the regrouping session did the Skyhawks plenty of good. Both Neiss and Pieper took turns dominating play thereafter, as the two scored 10 points in a row upping the lead to 38-26. Neiss worked his one-on-one play rather well the second half, at one point scoring 8 straight points on one bucket and 6 free throws. The score gradually got out of reach as North Boone began to use its brawn instead its height. Tempers flared and a technical was called on Crull, before Johnsburg took a commanding 74-42 lead with 4:51 left in the game. The subs came in and the game calmed down in the final minutes as John Armon put in two buckets and Scott CROSS COUNTRY SKI PACKAGE KAHRU TOURING WAX SKIS KAHRU KICK WAXLESSSKIS OFFICIAL SKISOF THE WINTER OLYMPICS -- • SKIS *90 • BOOTS *36 • BINDINGS *8*° Rentals • DAILY • WEEKLY •GROUP, • POLES *14 • MOUNTING *7" Reg. Pieper pumped in 14 second-half points to total 25 for the day as he continually made the fast break drive for the basket. Russ Beck scored 10 total points and gathered assist after assist, while Chuck Novy scored nine (five free throws) and Jeff Bartmann got his two points on a short, first- quarter jumper.
