Dry Condition of Skokie Causes Fire Lack of rain and intense heat has dried up the Skokie, the marsh lying west of the north shore towns be- tween Winnetka and Lake Forest, causing at least a dozen fires within the past week. Sunday afternoon Hubbard Woods was threatened by a fire which reached rather serious proportions and burnt at least forty acres of woods and prairie. The Glencoe fire department found it necessary to build an immense trench nearly a block long and twenty feet wide to prevent the blaze from spreading into the town. The fire swept along the Skokie just south of the Skokie "Country club and was en- tering Hubbard Woods near the north limits when checked. Three times during the past week prairie fires have threatened .the buildings on the Bob O'Link Golf course. A fire occurring last Satur- day was fought for more than three hours by the Highland Park fire de- partment. Lighted cigars and cigar- ets thrown from passing automobiles are largely to blame for the origin of these fires. The peaty construc- tion of the Skokie marsh intensified the blaze. Many people have been wondering why the air has been so full of smoke recently. It is due to these fires. THIS BATTERY POINTER MAY SAVE YOU TROUBLE "Don't be too generous with the distilled water when you're putting it in batteries," says Carpenter, local Willard expert. If you are, you re likely to do just as much harm as if you neglected to put any water at all in. OE EH ER inG= ni Hn rT ETT Mrs. Grace Kien Madison HII] just returned from abroad where she Has'laught a large ess of pupils willfopen qi Voice and Piano gislered. WEL] hN Res o S © \O ng "Of course water is mecessary, but | the idea is to put in just enough to ! replace the amount that has evapor- ated. If you put in more you're] getting into trouble in two ways; you're weakening the battery, and worse than that you're taking the pres step toward ruining your battery OX. "If the water remained in the bat- tery as water there would be not chance of damage--but it doesn't. It mixes right in with the acid. "Consequently if your battery is to full the acid begins to slop out at the top with the first hard jolt and keeps | spilling little by little until the dam- age iS done. This acid is strong enough to eat through wood or iron, and will. take the wooden bottom right out of the battery box. "You'll sidestep a lot of trouble, to stop as soon as the solution rises to half an inch over the tops of the bat- tery plates." Keep Doorknobs Tight Doorknob screws often work out ||k and let the knob come off. This may be prevented by removing loose screws, covering them with glue and screwing them back into place.
