4 WINNETKA WEEKLY TALK, SATURDAY, JANUARY 10, 1925 | WOMEN TO HEAR OF LAW-MAKING Voters League to Discuss Child Labor Amendment at January Meeting GET LEGISLATION TIPS Mrs. Walter F. Dodd to Speak Monday The work that is being handled by the Illinois legislature, now in session, is to be the subject of the January meeting of the Winnetka League of Women Voters. The meeting is to be held Monday, January 12, in Com- munity House, and will begin, as usu- al, with luncheon at 12:30 o'clock. In the absence of the president, Mrs. Walter Benson, the vice president, Mrs. Edwin E. Brown, will preside. Special emphasis will be put on the Guild Labor Amendment to the Constitution of the United States, passed by Congress and now before the Illinois legislature for ratification. This measure is being heartily sup- ported by the League of Women Vot- ers throughout the country. It is to be presented at this meeting of the Winnetka league by Mrs. Willoughby 'Walling, Mrs. Arthur Cushman, Mrs. (A. Sylvanus Levy and Miss Ruth Matz, all of Winnetka. Each speak- er will have five minutes and will bring out points on both sides of this widely discussed matter. Mrs. Charles Strong, chairman of the Child Welfare committee of the Winnetka league, is in charge of this part of the program. "There will be a five-minute period for questions at the close of these talks, but women who have further questions will have an opportunity to have them answered at the close of the meeting. Discuss Springfield Activities After the 25 minutes devoted to the Child Labor Amendment, Mrs. Wal- ter F. Dodd of Chicago will give her fourth popular lecture on government, which 1s to be devoted, this time, to the work of the present sitting of the legislature. Mrs. Dodd is in constant telegraphic communication with Springfield and will have the very latest news from the capital. She will also outline briefly all matters that are expected to come before the leg- islature in the course of this session and explain the methods of handling them. Mrs. Dodd's lecture is open to the public free of charge. It will be- «in at about 1:30 o'clock. As this is the beginning of the fis- cay year for the league, members have been urged to bring their dues and pay them to the treasurer, George Parker, at the time they pay for their luncheons. This, it is ex- plained, will greatly reduce the amount of postage and printing to be paid for by the league, as well as the work of the treasurer. As the very small league dues do not begin to pay for the work of the organization, Mrs. J. P. Yoder has volunteered to get 100 subscriptions for the "Wom- an Citizen," which will pay a con- siderable bonus for this work, and to turn the money over to the league. Make Reservations Today Members desiring luncheon reser- vations have been reminded to make them by this noon with Mrs. Leslie Gooder, Winnetka 1149, as the order- ing for 70 or 80 persons cannot be arranged at the last minute. Women living in Winnetka and Kenilworth are eligible to member- ship in the league, it is announced. Skokie School Alumni Perfect Organization At a meeting of the alumni of the Skokie school, January 3, plans were formed to organize a permanent al- umni society. About 90 former pupils of the school attended, which is 60 per cent of those who have graduated. Ben Crawford, Frances Anderson, Mabel Anderson and Montgomery McKinney were chosen to perfect ar- rangements for the permanent or- ganization. Tuesday, Constance Talmadge will appear in "Her Night of Romance," while, on Friday, Richard Barthelmess will oc- cupy the screen in "Classmates." "Frisky, but not risky." That's how Constance Talmadge likes her comedy plots,. she says: "I like stories that are full of fun and frivolity-- or gags and gayety." In "Her Night of Romance" you will find them all. It is a "frisky, but not risky" love tangle wherein an American heiress dis- guises herself as an old maid to dodge fortune hunters during a European tour and falls right into the arms of one. - "Classmates" is heralded as a thrill- ing tale of love and adventure with the famous star "hitting on high." It is a picturesque and colorful story of West Point life where most of the scenes were taken through the co- operation of army officials. The story shows Dick as a coun- try vquth enrolled at West Point. His rival for the love of a girl brings about his disgrace just as he is about to get his commission, and he dis- appears. How finally he redeems himself by rescuing his rival in the heart of the Amazon jungles brings a thrilling contrast to the delightful episodes of West Point life. Madge Evans, as the girl, appears exceedingly young and pretty and bids fair to win greater honors on the screen. She will be remembered by old timers as perhaps the original child actress of the movies.
