WINNETKA WEEKLY TALK, SATURDAY, JANUARY 10, 1925 w TWO PLAYS FOR US NEXT WEEK Community Dramatists Ap- pear January 14-15 BY M. T. H. A study in contrasts will greet the playgoers who on the evenings of Jan- uary 14 and 15, at Community House, view the performance of Sutro's, "A Marriage Has Been Arranged," and Tchekoff's, "A Marriage Proposal." These two exceedingly clever plays are to be presented by the Winnetka Community Players. The subtlety, dignity and repression of the English play is in sharp con- trast to the naivete, informality and volubility of the Russian. These op- posing characteristics so typical of the different peoples portrayed are brought out by authors thoroughly familiar with the types they repro- duce. Alfred Sutro, one of the clever- est of modern English playrights, pic- tures the true English woman in Lady Aline. Everyone is expecting the an- nouncement of her ladyship's en- gagement to an American millionaire. Her mother arranges for the couple to be alone in a room during a ball where Lady Aline first concludes her suitor is the most vulgar parvenu she has ever met. She refuses point blank to marry him and later realizes how greatly she has misjudged him. This brings the play to a surprising con- clusion. Depicts Russian Type Anton Tchekoff is a master of con- temporary Russian Literature and possesses great insight into the char- acter of his people. In this play "A Marriage Proposal" he appears to be asking his audience to cast off re- straint and laugh with him at the stupidity and simplicity, as well as the good heartedness of the people he knew so well. The plays have been cast with great care and as a result the portrayals should bring out with much finesse, the author's clever points. Mrs. Lloyd Faxon will direct Sutro's play and the cast although only a "Twosome" is well chosen. Mrs. Taliaferro Mil- ton plays: Ladv Aline and opposite her is Mr. Godfrey H. Atkin. Excellent Cast "A Marriage Proposal" will be di- rected by Mrs. J. P. Yoder and the cast consists of Carleton W. Wash- burne, Milton Higgins and Mrs. Ryer- son Gates. The Technical Staff is composed of Miss Olive Grover, Mrs. Wm. Van Horne, Mr. John Marshall, Mr. Albourne B. Long and Mr. Alfred Freeman. Lighting effects will be of interest as the cyclorama is to be used in con- junction with new and special stage lighting equipment but recently pro- vided at Community House. Music will be in charge of Mrs. Arthur Dean. The performance on the evening of January 14 will be for members only, while the general public is invited for the evening of January 15, at which time a small admission fee will be charged.
