Discover Fraud Behind Selling for "Disabled" The source of house-to-house solici- tation for "disabled veterans," a prac- tice condemned by Winnetka Post of the American Legion through the columns of WINNETKA TALK several months ago, was discovered in Chi- cago this week when uniformed solic- itors admitted they are in the employ of a man who supplied their wares and later "split with them on a 50-50 basis." In other words, the "disabled veterans" in this instance, were a myth and the proceeds from the sales were amassing a comfortable fortune for an able-bodied schemer. Winnetka Post has repeatedly warn- ed local householders against patron- izing these house-to-house solicitors who usually appear in army garb and enter a plea for aid for disabled men. It now appears that the Chicago police have checked at least one source of this common fraud. It is emphasized that aid for dis- abled war veterans comes through the channels of the American legion and other recognized agencies, so that pan- handling solicitation is entirely unnec- essary.
