4 WINNETKA WEEKLY TALK, SATURDAY, JANUARY 17, 1925 | PUBLIC FORUM Editor, WINNETKA TALK: A letter in last week's TALK from the Rev. J. W. F. Davies, expressing his feeling about the model for the pro- posed War Memorial that has been on exhibition and containing the sug- gestion for a utilitarian memorial, such as chimes in the new Village hall, has made me think that the story of how this design came into being might not be amiss at this time. In the fall of 1919 there existed here a body called the Winnetka Commu- nity council, the outgrowth of all the various war activities and made up of representatives from each, as well as the Village council, the Board of Education, Community House, and all our regular village organizations. At its meetings the question of a me- morial of sort was discussed and a committee consisting of Mrs. Wiley J. Huddle, chairman, representing the Village council, Rev. E. Ashley Ger- hard, the Legion, Mrs. J. O. Ely, the gold star parents, Mr. Roswell Ma- son, Mr. John Leonard, Mr. William B. McIlvaine and Mrs. Franklin Ru- dolph, was appointed to study the question and determine what form the memorial should take. During 1920 many meetings were held and discus- sion was spirited, but as the commit- tee gradually began to realize how many utilitarian memorials had been built, which after a few years, are called "Memorial Hall," "School Field" or what not, and people have for- gotten the special event or person they were meant to commemorate, the This point reached, the committee asked the architects of the village to meet with it, the situation was pres- ented, and the result was a meeting in the summer of 1921 at which six- teen sketches wires submitted. No suggestions had Dewi made and each man expressed his own idea. At this time Mrs. J. Allen Haines, Mr. Wil- liam A. Otis and Mr. William Jones Smith were added to the committee and plans formulated for a final com- petition. The scheme selected was that of an ornamental flagstaff and sev- eral months were given for the de- signing of the work. At the appoint- ed 'time the drawings were handed in anonymously, to a jury of threé, two branches of the service and an inscrip- tion to all who served, as well as the names of the men who gave their lives for all that the flag stands for. The committee began its work with an open mind. When its duties were finished the carrying out of the de- sign was turned over to the Village Improvement association, the Commu- nity council having gone out of exis- tence, and the committee disbanded. Its members still retain this open- minded attitude, and although rather late, expressions of opinion by those who are interested in seeing a Me- morial erected would be valued. architects and a layman, consisting of Mr. John Root, chosen by the com- petitors, Mr. Edward H. Bennett, of the Chicago Beautiful Commission and also designer of the Winnetka Munic- ipal Plan, and Mrs. Franklin Rudolph, lay member. The design unanimously chosen, en- tered under the name of Nike Ap- teros, proved to be by Samuel S. Otis, himself a service man. The architects of the jury were ex- tremely congratulatory, as they thought we had an exceedingly beauti- ful and distinguished design, of which the center is a flagstaff with a bronze base steel shaft to carry the great flag that is the inspiration of every man, woman and child among us, and around which we all gather on patri- otic occasions to express our love for all that it symbolizes and under whose folds will be spoken many in- spiring words to the generations who have the future of our country in their hands. The cenotaph which stands behind it will have a frieze of onward- marching men, representing all sentiment began to narrow down to a definite monumental memorial, especi- ally as such a one was desired by the parents of those who had given their lives in the Great War. For a memorial of this character, the Village Green, the center of all our patriotic celebrations, was obviously the appropriate place, for here every man whose name would be com- memorated had played as a child and grown to manhood participating in all that went on there, and the site of the present flagstaff was chosen.
