"WINNETKA WEEKLY TALK, SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 14, 1925 21 NEW GOLF CLUB "HOUSE FINISHED Northwestern Course in For- est Preserve Shows Profit During First Year READY FOR OPENING Early Spring Will Find Links in Fine Shape North Shore golf enthusiasts will learn with delight of the low cost of golfing at the new Northwestern Public Links in the Forest Preserve. The new club house has been com- pleted and work on the grounds is progressing at a pace which will in- sure their being in shape for play early this season. Figures just disclosed by Charles F. Speed, in charge of the building and improvements, show that the to-. tal cost of the club house will be only $12,000 when completed, with $8,227 .- 89 spent to date." Equipment for the care of the club and grounds and for other purposes will amount to $4,316.- 08 and all expenses amount to $44.- 459.09, the report shows. Receipts to date up to December were $17,591. Operating expenses for the same peri- od were $11,947.36, showing an excess of income over expenses of $5.644.41 which is the pleasant New . Year's greeting with which the club will start the 1925 season. f Fees Are Moderate This course is laid out on the For- est Preserve and is open to the pub- lic at low fees. It is expected that the course will be all ready for play as soon as the spring season opens and the club house will also be completed before that time. The club house has been built at at unusually low cost considering the facilities provided, Mr. Speed believes. Other clubs of almost identical type are costing some golf organizations as high as $60,000, he says but the fact that building was preceded by unus- ually careful investigation into possi- bilities has resulted in a very advan- tageous contract, with the public reap- ing the benefit. The main lobby of the club house will be 48 by 48 feet and the second floor is screened in as an open air din- ing room with a view in all directions over the beautiful Forest Preserve landscape. Locker rooms 20 feet by 48 feet are provided, one each for ------ men. and -wemen .giving a total of 6,500 feet of floor space. The con- struction is concrete and steel. Run Without Profit The club is to be run without profit, all excess of income over running ex- penses going into the improvement of the club or the reduction of any debt that may exist. The expenditure of $31,915 for the preparation of-the_fair- ways and green is considered unusu- ally moderate, although it is the great- est single item of expense to the club. Matinee Dance Will Aid Girls' Scholarship Fund New Trier students flocked to the matinee dance given by the Girl's club Thursday 'afternoon in the mess hall of the school. These dances, given frequently dur- ing the year, are open to all students and are for the double purpose of providing an.opportunity for pupils to become better acquainted and to raise money for a scholarship fund, out of which money is contributed to poor girls to enable them to go to school. | * The music was furnished by" a" school organization. ; Many Students Entered in Barnett Essay Test Twenty-one New Trier high school students have entered papers in the Barnett Prize contest. NE of the most antiquated institutions that still persists in the O retail furniture business today is the widely-advertised and much-abused Semi-Annual "Sale," occurring in August and Feb- ruary. At the time of its origin, there was certain justification for the sale idea as. a clearance for the many odds and ends that ac-' cumulated in the average furniture business as conducted at that Today, the semi-annual "sale" has been allowed to degenerate by some until it is an insult not only to those engaged in the business itself but to the intelligence of the public that supports the furniture industry. Too much of the "Special Purchase" furniture, made up especially for the "sales," has been manu- factured with only low price in mind, to the exclusion so often of the more important quality consideration. Too much of the sale "advertising" with its wild promises of "discounts" and "reductions" is in the realm-of the impossible, economically-- to say nothing of it being actually untrue. IF YOU DO BELIEVE THE "FEBRUARY SALE" ADVER- TISEMENTS--wou will have to believe among other things that a bedroom suite" that originally sold for and was actually worth ("reduction 50%). never run at a loss, any one knows there is a profit being made even at the reduced price of $400. This being the case, it is ap- parent that a policy of highway robbery has been practiced on the many people who, in the months previously to February were urged to buy this suite for $800. How long would you, for example, trade with a grocer who said: "Yes, Madam, we must get high prices for our goods most of the year, but please don't fail to patronize 1 us in August and February when our prices have been reduced." You would most certainly find another grocer who could be depended upon for consistent good value, regardless of month or You may safely buy here NOW at our low, all-year-'round price, with the complete assurance that if, by any chance, the same mer- chandise should be offered at a lower price in one of the coming "sales," you will receive immediately, upon demand, a cash refund for the difference between the "sale price" Iment of this promise needs no other assurance than the gained by Brown-Umlandt in this community.
