Janet Shepard and Helen Putt Glinda Romayne Gunsteens This production was staged mostly PLAYERS HEAR TALKS ON PLAY DIRECTING Alexander Dean, professor of Dra- matic Arts at the School of Speech, Northwestern university, has just com- pleted a series of 12 lectures on play directing before a group of members of the Community Players. Fifteen women took the course. Some of the subjects of his lectures were: *"Com- munity Theater Management," "Stage Technique," "Picturization," "Tempo," "Emphasis," "Reading of Comedy," and "Stage Management." So successful was the coures that the Community Players are planning a series of courses by Mr. Dean for next year. Some of the courses to be offered will probably be "Make Up," "The Contemporary Theater," and "Play Con- struction." Mr. Dean, in addition to being a mem- ber of the faculty of Northwestern uni- versity, is director of the North Shore Theater Guild. Previously he was di- rector of the Little Theater of Dallas, Texas and director of dramatics at the University of Montana. He appeared on the professional stage in company with John Drew, Rose Coghlan and Margaret Illington. He is a graduate of the "47 Workshop" of Harvard univer- sity. He has been a special lecturer for the Drama League Institute and the University of Michigan and has written many articles on play production for The Drama and other magazines. His one act play, "Just Neighborly" has just come out in book form. IN PEP SESSION Improvement Association Starts Clean-up Drive Prof. William IL. Bailey, head of the department of sociology at Northwestern university, and the man who recently selected Winnetka as the model suburban community of the United States, spoke before the annual meeting of the Hub- bard Woods Improvement association held at the Hubbard Woods school on Friday night of this week. The subject of his address was "I'he Making of an Ideal American Community." At this meeting the suggestions for the improving of the Hubbard Woods station environs, which is being under- taken on a large scale by the citizens of the vicinity, supported by the im- provement association, were read and discussed, and new suggestions were re- ceived. The association sent out letters to resi- dents of the district last week asking for contributions to carry on the work of improvement and also requesting sug- gestions as to what should be done. Ac- cording to officials of the association there has been an immediate response, and both contributions and suggestions have come in in large numbers. The entire program of improvements was outlined at the meeting and many new suggestions were taken into consider- ation. The question of parking space at the station was left to the Park board, as it was felt that it could be ture foot trouble.
