WINNETKA WEEKLY TALK, SATURDAY, MARCH 28, 1925 'COPPERHEAD' GIVEN TONIGHT Play of Civil War Times to Be' Produced by New Trier Dramatic Club AN EXCEPTIONAL CAST . le Bate a DELL] ----- Lhe "Director -- " we fig Miss "The Copperhead," by Augustus Thomas is to be presented by the New Trier Dramatic club tonight at the New Trier auditorium. . At 8:15 o'clock, the curtain will rise disclosing a farm scene, the setting of which is laid in southern Illinois at the time of the Civil war. The story opens with everyone roused to the call to arms issued by President Lin- coln. During the first act, interest is borne along on the emotions of the characters who portray the life of ordinary farmfolk during that time. Milt Shanks, the "copperhead," gives an everlasting hurt to his wife when he refuses to enlist in the volunteers even though his refural means that his 16 year old son will march away with the army in is place. The cur- tain falls on a stirring scene in which the Union men, the brave lad among them, march past the farmhouse to the strains of their own songs. Highly Emotional Scenes In the second act, showing the same setting two years later, the news of Lee's surrender comes to the farm. Soen after, the father, Shanks, enters upon the scene having been pardoned by the governor on a murder charge. While he is trying to win his wife's forgiveness too, they receive the mes- sage informing them of their son's death. In a passion of grief, the moth- er spurns all offers of comfort from her husband. The act closes with the emotional tensity of this scene. Forty years elapse between the sec- ond and third acts. In this time, Milt's daughter and nearly all his friends have died. So he is left al- most alone, for his wife had died but a few days after hearing of her son's death, those 40 long years ago. Al- most alone, but not quite, for Madel- ine King, daughter of the girl Elsie, who in the first two acts was seen as but a baby, has come to live with her grandfather. So the third act opens with Madel- ine and Milt Shanks peacefully at home. shattered however when one of the] men who had worked for the South | Summer and winter (such as they have | than five years. Loved After 40 Years The last act brings about a disclos- ure of Milt's innocence of the charge of murderer and "copperhead" and proves instead that he had been loyally working as a spy for President Lincoln all the time. Naturally this ends the ostracism laid upon him by oldtime friends and he is once more warmly accepted as one of themselves by his fellow townsmen. The appeal to one's heartfelt sympathy is great when Milt Shanks, the one-time "copperhead," is able to say: "It's wonderful - to hev friends - agin!" The cast has been carefully directed by Miss Elizabeth Stanwood with the result that it is ready to present some fine dramatization of this great play of the Civil war.
