WINNETKA WEEKLY TALK, SATURDAY, APRIL 4, 1925 0 DRUGGISTS WILL "FORM INSTITUTE Research Headquarters to Benefit Public The officers of the American Phar- maceutical association have just is- sued a statement on a new Researh Institute to be established by phar- macy for the benefit of the public. The announcement calls attention to some of the important discoveries and con- tributions by pharmacists and especi- ally to the scientific research labora- tory for the study of drugs and medi- cines. The state which has been pre- pared by President C. W. Holton, New- ark, New Jersey; Dean W. B. Day, secretary, University of Illinois, Chi- cago, and Dr. E. IL. Newcomb, public- ity director, University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, reads as follows: "Since the earliest times pharma- cists have rendered to the public valu- able service in the discovery and im- provement of medicines. Started by Pharmacists "In 1776, Peter J. A. Daries, a phar- macist, discovered that the drug Bella- donna caused dilation of the pupil of the eye. Ever since, preparations of this drug have been extensively used by physicians, surgeons and optomet- rists with the unquestionable result that eyesight has been saved to thou- sands upon thousands of people. "In 1816, Friedrich W. A. Serturner, pharmacist of Eimbeck, in Hanover, enriched science with the discovery of morphine. This drug has undoubtedly relieved more human suffering than any other medicinal agent. It is true that morphine has been grossly mis- used. Government and other statistics show that over 99 per cent of the mis- use of morphine is by others than physicians or pharmacists. The latter are primarily responsible for our pres- ent strict laws prohibiting the improp- er use of morphine, and this in view of the fact that these laws place oner- ous burdens upon pharmacists and physicians. Provide Scientific Standards "For over fifty years the pharmacists of the United States have provided scientific .standards for the supply of pure, unadulterated drugs and medi- cines to the public. Today physicians and the public at large have medicines a the standards for which are equaled in any other country. "In 1906 the United States Govern- ment accepted these drug standards prepared by pharmacists as the legal standards for enforcement of the Food and Drugs Act. At this time a com- mittee of over 30 pharmacists of the United States are giving gratu- itously of their time and scientific knowledge to keep these standards abreast with modern research . "The pharmaceutical interests of the United States are now engaged in the work of establishing a great cen- tral headquarters building. One of the chief features of this institution will be a complete scientific research laboratory for the study of drugs and medicines. "The completion and operation of this new institution will bring many advantages to pharmacy. To the pub- lic it will bring the results of new re- search for the lasting benefit of all mankind." Local druggists are sponsors of the institute.
