WINNETKA WEEKLY TALK, SATURDAY, APRIL 4, 1925 15 FINE VALUES IN MOTORDOM Cars of 1925 Give Most for Money The year 1925 will go down in his- tory as the year in which the econo- mist stepped in and took charge of the automobile industry and, as a re- sult, the cars of 1925 are by far the best values ever displayed at automo- bile shows or on: the floors of dealers' salesrooms throughout the United States, says G. M. Williams, presi- dent of the Nordyke and Marmon com- pany. This is not true of the Nordyke and Marmon company alone--it is gen- erally true of the entire automobile industry, Mr. Williams says. Mr. Williams's statement was re- ceived by F. C. Heaney, north shore Marmon dealer. "Not that the economist is crowding out the engineer and the production expert--far from it," Mr. Williams says. "He is merely assuming the leading role that others heretofore have been playing, due to the default of the expert economist, or money- saver. In every automobile show which IT have attended this year, in- cluding the national shows at New York and Chicago, I have found among factory executives a disposition to make every dollar count throughout every department of the business. "The Nordyke and Marmon com- pany for many months past has been systematically improving its factory and distribution efficiency--stopping all waste effort in all departments and thus enabling the company to pro- duce for the public a much better car for much less money." Mr. Williams says that another un- mistakable development of the pres- ent year is an entirely new brand of intense interest and an entirely new type of effort in the sales end of the industry. "The man who today looks upon himself merely as a manufacturer is doomed," Mr. Williams says. He must of .necessity, now realize that the other and more important half of his function is to sell what he makes. Merely producing a worthy product is only one step along the right road. The next step is, of course, to let the public know you have done so--in other words, to advertise. But the fi. nal step and the most important step is through properly organized sales effort to convert that knowledge on the part of the public into orders. "Our company is proceeding along these fundamental lines. We have never produced so fine and so satis- factory a car as the present Marmon. Because of still further increased ef- ficiency in our factory and sales de- partments, we have cut out waste and are in a position to offer greatly inc creased quality at a considerable re- duction in price. Concurrently, great attention has been given to the man- ner in which the sales message is be- ing transmitted to the public. As a result of these various important fac- tors, our company today is enjoying by far the greatest volume of sales in its history. Recentlyswe conducted a sur- vey of shipments to Marmon distribu- tors throughout the United States during the months of December, 1924 and January 1925 as compared with the shipments during the correspond- ing months last year. . This survey hows an increase of 177.3 per cent in Marmon sales." Mr. Williams very emphatically states that the automobile industry has not reached the saturation point by any means and that 1925 will, unques- tionably be an excellent year through- out the entire country. He points pri- marily to the rehabilitation of the farmer and the quiet confidence which business is expressing through in- creased bank clearances everywhere. "Another factor is the open winter weather which has prevailed through- out the country and which is produc- ing a most unusual spring buying epidemic. I am quite sure that so far as Nordyke and Marmon is concerned, our problem will become one of pro- duction rather than sales. As a mat- ter of fact we have practically reached that point now." WATCH YOUR HEALTH STEP! Drive a motor at top speed for an hour or two, then suddenly cool it off and you will get a set of warped valves that will rattle like a kettle drum. The human body is up against a similar proposition after a hard win- ter. Low temperatures keep the body functioning at high tension and then spring weather permits it suddenly to relax. 'This gives disease germs an opportunity and they never fail to take advantage of it. Careful, regular habits, giving a wide berth to undue exposures and fatigue are therefore in order at this season. The North Shore Line has caused to be struck a gold First Aid Medal, awarded each North Shore employee instrumental in saving a human life. The bestowal of the First Aid Medal, following a recommendation and attended by a careful scrutiny of the circumstances, makes it valued beyond price. To change the phrase a bit, peace hath her medals no less renowned than war, and the North Shore First Aid medal is a proud example. In preparation for first aid service, the North Shore Line holds a first aid school for its employees. A thorough course of study and lectures is followed by examinations given by the company and the American Red Cross, and upon passing, the award of diplo- mas by each. Three hundred employees are trained in first aid at the present time, with two uniformed drill teams of 20 men and women each that demonstrate correct technique before civic bodies and clubs. North Shore employees themselves have made this branch of service conspicuous for its excellence.
