*Beethoven, respectively, the best be= WINNETKA WEEKLY TALK, SATURDAY, APRIL 11, 1925 HL 11 MASTER CELLIST AWES HEARERS Final MacDowell Concert Tremendous Success By MUSIC CRITIC The 1924-25 Artist-Recital series ended in a blaze of glory. What the writer means is the last concert in this season's remarkable group capped the climax. At 8 o'clock New Trier hall was com- pletely occupied--except a few poor seats. Mrs. Roland Whitman, repre- senting the Winnetka Mac Dowell Musical club, made a few prefatory remarks about the club's plans for next year. She said that four recitals would be given and that the artists themselves would be up to the 1924-25 standard of excellence. She was able to mention the name of only one artist, the others not yet having been engaged. This one was Madame Matz- anauer, the well-known contralto. Then came the program of the eve- ning, introduced by Mme. Ivogun with two delightful soprano solos, one by Mozart, the other by Pergolesi. She sang them with a fluent ease, a purity and sweetness of tone, and a complete command of vocal art. The audience demanded an encore and received the old favorite, "When love is kind," which Mme. Ivogun sang with charm- Img vivacity. After her appeared the master. Pablo Casals. He played an 18th century sonata, comprising three movements-- Allegro, Adagio, and Rondo Allegro. The writer can only say that his play- ing was perfect in tone, techniaue, in- terpretation, and expression. This is a great deal to say, but it is not ex- aggeration. His ease is astonishing, the most difficult passages seeming as simple for him as the least difficult. His skill is almost supernatural. He plays with his eyes closed, not look- ing at his bow or the strings even in the most exacting runs, double stops, and harmonics. He always seems to be listening to the sounds he himself produces. He plays with authority. Mme. Ivogun followed with a song by Massenet and another, a villanelle, hy Dell' Acqua. For an encore she pre- sented a number which the writer be- lieves was extracted from Thomas's "Mignon." Casals came next with three pieces by Bach, Senaille, and ing the Bach offering, an Arioso. The singer of the evening then presented her final group, a cluster of modern love lyrics, which gave so much pleas- ure that the audience asked for more. The encore, a vocal setting of the Blue Danube waltz, was so delightful that the charming singer was obliged to give a second extra, an arrangement of the famous melody in Dvorak's New World Symphony, and not very good. The program closed with four selec- tions by the great cellist, two being almost popular--"The Bee" by Schu- bert and "The Swan" by Saint-Saens. To this final group, as to every other, Casals gave an encore. The writer is pleased that Casals refused to begin this encore until those who were leav- ing had definitely left and the door was closed. The two accompanists were excel- lent, subordinating their parts to the work of their principals and playing appropriate feeling and unusual skill.
