WINNETKA WEEKLY TALK, SATURDAY, APRIL 11, 1925 3 FIRES HIT PEAK SINCE APRIL 1 Department Receives Many Compliments There have been 19 fires since the first day of April, which establishes a record for Winnetka, according to Chief G. M. Houren of the fire department. Seven- teen of these fires were rubbish or grass fires and the other two were in resi- dences. The garage of the Leonard Peterson premises at 687 Lincoln avenue, was damaged to the extent of $250 Saturday when the roof of the building caught fire from an unknown cause. Sparks from a rubbish burner set fire to the roof of William C. Boyden's home at 725 Pine street, Sunday, causing a damage of $100. Prompt action by the fire department prevented serious damage to the dwelling. The following letter from Mr. Boyden was received by Chief Houren: Make Quick Response "lI want to thank you and your men for the very prompt response to our call for help on Sunday morning. If you had not been so prompt and so effective I am sure that we were in for a serious loss. "Will you please accept the enclosed check for your pension fund, and believe me, gratefully yours, W. C. Boyden." Another letter which was received by Chief Houren recently was from Forest R. Lowrey, whose home at 550 Oak sireet was damaged to the extent of $1750 on March 28 in a fire caused by hot ashes in the ash pit. This letter follows: "Once before during my residence in Winnetka I had occasion to express my appreciation of the prompt and efficient manner in which you and your men han- dle fire emergencies. "The service which you render resi- dents of the community was again called to my attention last Saturday, March 28, when you answered a call at my residence about noon. The speed with which you reached the scene of action, the efficiency with which you located the fire and got it under control, together with your Waich Your Eyes Many women, by r.eglect or im- proper care, allow their EYES to become lusterless, dull and unat- tractive. "With kindest personal regards, I am, yours very truly, Forest R. Lowrey." | Camp FireEmbers | CHINESE TEA Some one peeked into the Camp Fire room in Community House the other day and was surprised to see a hilarious group of girls awkwardly trying to ma- nipulate chop sticks, and loudly sipping ea in Chinese fashion. Had that per- son remained to learn more about this affair, he would have found that this was a group of Camp Fire Girls enjoy- ing the labors of each individual girl who has helped with that Chinese din- ner, and that they were poignantly ap- preciating some of the table customs of Chinese people, by following the exam- ple of their guardian, Mrs. Paul Hut- chinson, who had spent some time in China. It was great fun eating with the chop sticks from Chinese dishes. And here was much conversation to Chinese customs.
