16 WINNETKA WEEKLY TALK, SATURDAY, APRIL 18, 1925 PROVIDE HEALTH WEEK PROGRAMS State Director in Preliminary Announcement Playlets, songs and movies are in high favor for health week programs, according to Dr. Isaac Rawlings, state health director. What was regarded as an ample supply of playlets, and songs to satisfy the demands for health promotion week, which will be ob- served April 26 to May 2, was pub- lished some time ago and now a second and larger edition of this material is practically exhausted, the directors said. The demands for picture films have made it necessary to draw upon a number of outside agencies to fill the needs. "Public interest in health week is dis- tinctly greater than ever before since the custom was inaugurated in the state seven years ago," said Dr. Rawl- ings. "Response to program sugges- tions from schools, colleges, medical societies, health associations and churches have been especially volum- inous. College presidents from all parts of the state have expressed a pur- pose to put on health programs for the benefit of student bodies. School teach- ers and nurses in practically every county are planning to present health playlets and songs. Other organiza- tions are preparing programs on a com- munity scale, involving pictures, health demonstrations and lectures by talented speakers. Furnish Speakers "At a recent meeting in Springfield between representatives of half a dozen state-wide health organizations it was decided to pool the educational re- sources of all agencies in order to facilitate wide usage during health week. This arrangement offers to the public a surprisingly wide selection of such material as songs, playlets, mo- tion picture films, posters, literature and talented speakers. Through the Illinois Medical society it will be pos- sible to fill 150 speaking engagements with some of the very best public speakers in the medical profession of the state. All of these services and material are available through the state health department at Springfield. "The purpose of health week is sim- ply to focus public thought on this important subject. It is interesting to observe that since the first observance of this event in 1919, the state has en- joyed the most favorable health con- ditions of which there are records. Mortality rates have been exceedingly low by comparison. Epidemics have Dosey few. Good health has been the rule." Illinois Near Top With Electric Equipped Homes Illinois holds fourth place among the states of the nation in the percentage of its homes which are equipped with electrical service, according to a re- cently completed census. This state and Michigan are the only ones in the Middle West which are listed among the 10 highest in the United States, the latter ranking immediately after Illinois. Utah, California and Connecticut were the trio, in the order named, which outrank Illinois. The percentage of electrically- equip- ped homes in this state is 73.2, a per- centage which indicates that more than 1,100,000 of the 1,500,000 homes in Illi- nois now are enjoying the benefits of electric lights and electrically-operated home appliances. The 10 leading states, with their present percentages, are as follows: Utah, 98.2 percent; California, 96.5 per- cent; Connecticut, 78.8 percent; Illi- nois, 73.2 percent; Michigan, 72.3 per- cent; Washington, 68.8 percent; Mas- sachusetts, 67.6 percent; Maine, 66.8 percent; Vermon, 66.3 percent and New Jersey, 65.8 percent. The average percentage of home electrification for the entire United States is 50.5 percent, meaning that approximately 13,100,000 of the Amer- ican homes are equipped for electric service. ELECTRICITY AS A DOORMAN Since even a Samson could not qualify as a doorman, electricity does the opening and shutting of the two biggest doors in the world, each weigh- ing more than 2000 tons, which slide aside to permit the two giant dirigibles, "Shenandoah" and "Los Angeles" to emerge from the Navy's hangar at Lakehurst, N. J. Each of these con- crete and steel portals is 139 feet in width and 177 feet high, and slide on trucks and rail. It requires half an hour and costs $120 to open this shed door. When two people talk by telephone, the conversation is equivalent to a let- ter from each to the other. Therefore, every telephone conversation equals two letters. On this basis, the Amer- ican people send over three times as many messages by telephone as by letter.
