6 WINNETKA WEEKLY TALK, SATURDAY, MAY 9, 1925 DAWES JOINS ROTARY RANKS Winnetka Men Help Him Lofty Honors Pay A large delegation from the Win- netka Rotary club went to Evanston Tuesday night to help the Evanston Rotarians celebrate their fifth anniver- sary and welcome Vice President Charles G. Dawes into the club as its fifth honorary member. Wilmette was also represented, as were the clubs in Oak Park and Chicago. It was a gala night for the Evans- tonians and their guests, who cele- brated with speeches, introductions of honorary members, past presidents and visiting Rotarians. The banquet room of the North Shore hotel was filled. Besides Mr. Dawes, there were four other honorary members present. They were Charles T. Bartlett, father of Ev- anston's new mayor; Walter Dill Scott, president of Northwestern university; William A Dyche, of the university business office, and William S. Mason. Past presidents who were present were Dean Ralph B. Dennis of the School of Speech at Northwestern university; Edward Ladd, publisher, and Earl Ire- dale, warehouse owner. C. L. Corpen- ing was the only past president miss- ing. Other prominent persons present were Prof. John A. Scott, brother of the university president, and who was one of the speakers; Ernest A. Smith, superintendent of the schools in Dis- trict 75, Evanston, and who is leaving soon to become president of the La Crosse Normal school; Dr. Lester Struthers of Rotary International; J. T. Werry of New Zealand, and Ches- ley R. Perry, a founder of Rotary and now a secretary of Rotary Interna- tional. Mr. Dawes made a speech filled with reminiscenses and anecdotes and accepted the membership proffered him by paying a high tribute to Rotary as an organization which had fostered the highest American ideals. Throughout the banquet, the famous pipe fumed merrily and the general joined in the general good spirits of the occasion. Joseph C. Breese was announced as the club's new president, during the evening. Huerter Post of the American Legion who, on that day, will bring to a culmi- nation a highly successful membership drive which is expected to more than double the roster of the post. With a membership of 45 veterans at the outset of the campaign, the post already has passed the 90 mark in the aggressive solicitation and expects to ap- proach 100 before the big night of fes- tivity next week. Monday's affair has been characterized as a stag and will include, in addition to the social program, a discussion of the plans for Memorial Day. Plans for this occasion are nearing completion and it is expected that an elaborate program will be arranged. Peier J. Huerter Post, started in the former Village of Gross Point, now in- cludes in its membership, ex-service men in virtually all of the towns in New Trier township, according to officers of the unit. The membership drive now rapidly drawing to a close has brought in applications from various localities in the township, many of whom came with- out solicitation, it was said.
