J -- 2% hy ay WINNETKA WEEKLY TALK, SATURDAY, MAY 16, 1925 13 North Shore Gardens Will Again Be Open to Public ITH the advent of another spring comes the word from the Lake Forest Garden club that once again the public, that portion at least, loving beautiful flowers and shrubs artistically arranged, will have the privilege of making four Saturday jaunts to a number of delightful gar- dens, at a small admission fee. But this season, Lake Forest estates will not be the only ones giving vis- itors glimpses of their beauty, for Winnetka and Kenilworth members of the Lake Forest Garden club will also open their gardens. In fact Saturday, May 16, will find several charming gar- den plots of the latter villages ready for inspection. Those journeying northward will find little white bags on the gates that will open in hospital- ity the gardens of Mrs. V. K. Spicer of Kenilworth, and Mrs. Howard K. Philips, Mrs. William G. 'Hibbard, Mrs. Robert Cluett, Mrs. Frederick Scott, Mrs. John W. Scott, and Mrs. James Simpson, all of Winnetka. On Saturday, May 30, the following Lake Forest gardens will be displayed; those of Mrs. Frances C. Farwell, Mrs. Aime Millet, Mrs. John Pirie, Mrs. James Viles, Mrs. George A. Seaverns, Sr. The following week, visitors will again go to Winnetka, to the gardens of Mrs. John Stuart, Mrs. Calvin Fen- tress, Mrs. Charles W. Hubbard, and Mrs. Edward Welles. The last visit will be to Lake Forest, on June 20, when Mrs. Louis Laflin, Mrs. A. A. Carpenter, Mrs. Roy K. Sturtevant, Mrs. Albert Blake Dick, Jr., Mrs. Philip Armour, Jr., and Mrs. William E. Clow, Sr. will open their gardens. A ticket purchased at any one of the gates displaying a white flag will give entree to all of the gardens open on that particular day. --_--Q-- Last Monday afternoon, Mrs. Wil- liam Sherman Hay of 645 Sheridan road, was hostess to the Winnetka Music club, formerly the MacDowell Society of Winnetka. Miss Harriet Hebert, contralto, opened the program with a group of French songs given ip a charming manner with pleasing voice and beau- tiful tone quality. Madame Rider gave a lecture on Russian musid and com- posers, playing Russian compositions by way of illustration, with that un- usual interpretation which only an artist can give. By special request of the club, Madame Rider played one of her own compositions which proved her to be a gifted composer as well as and interpreter of other masterpieces. At the conclusion of the program a delightful tea was served with Miss Champlin, Miss Dorothy Rae, Mrs. Jack Seaver, and Mrs. Helen Stewart, the assisting hostesses. --_--Q-- The last meeting of the Ridge Ave- nue circle will take place Monday afternoon, May 18, at 3 o'clock, at the home of Mrs. Horace Newhall, 654 Garland avenue, Winnetka. Mrs. Theodore Buenger will assist the host- ess. It is hoped that there will be a large attendance at the closing of the circle season. Orcutt of 185 Green Bay road, Hubbard Woods, and her two children, Francis and Dwight, Jr. have returned from Miami Beach, Fla. where, with Mrs. Orcutt's parents, Dr. and Mrs. Leach, they passed the win- ter. One of the prenuptial affairs for Miss Florence Pease of Kenilworth was the kitchen shower given by Mrs. Robert Bennett and Miss Dorothy Koltz last Thursday at the former's home on Sheridan road. Miss Pease will become the bride of Wesley Blum this evening. --O-- Sperry Butler, son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles E. Butler, 100 Green Bay road, Hubbard Woods, has been elected a member of the homorary socciety of Phi Beta Kappa at Amherst college. Mr. Butler is a junior and. is a gradu- ate of the Winnetka public schools and of Lake Forest academy. --Q-- Mr. and Mrs. Arthur F. Sterrett and their daughter, Margaret, of 488 Ash street, are leaving June 22, for New York, to sail five days later for a sum- mer abroad. They will visit England and the Continent, and will take the southern Mediterranean cruise on their return. Oe: Mrs. Howard W. Fenton of Winnet- ka, gave a dinner for her daughter Miss Mary Louise Fenton, at the Casa de Manana in La Jolla, Cal, last Sun- day, in celebration of her birthday. Miss Fenton is attending the Bishop school in La Jolla. She also gave the address at the Hawthorne School Parent-Teacher association in Oak Park, on Thursday of the past week. Mrs. W. M. Peterson, 164 Wood- lawn avenue, Winnetka, is home from the Evansfon hospital where she has been the past six weeks recovering from a nervous breakdown. Williams Macy took part in a revival of "Mary the Third" by the North Shore Thea- tre Guild at the Highland Park Wom- an's club on Friday evening.
