Again the schedule has been designed with a view to balance, the heavier works being interspersed with those of lighter caliber, thus appealing to all classes of music appreciators. Satur- day night, July 4, the season's initial week will close with a presentation of "Manon" by Massenet, in which Lucre- zia Bori, generally recognized as the greatest of all the Manons, will sing opposite Tito Schipa, whose reputa- tion as Des Crieux is world-wide. Leon Rothier will be heard as the father. The large cast of this melodious French T opera includes Desire Defrere, Louis | and Mr. Ananian as Sir Tristan. Mrs. D'Angelo, Giordano Paltrineri, Mar- gery Maxwell, Ada Paggi, Paolo An- anian and Virgilia Grassi. Louis Has- selmans wil conduct. Sunday afternoon there will be a concert by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra under the direc- tion of Eric Del.aMarter. Jacques Gordon, violinist, will be the soloist. Concert Monday Night Sunday night, "Aida" with that in- comparable trio, Mme. Rosa Raisa, Giovanni Martinelli and Giuseppe Dan- ise in the leading roles, will be pre- sented and Virgilio Lazzari will come into the role of Ramfis, in which he en- joys world fame. Others are Ina Bourskava, Louis D'Angelo and Gior- dano Paltriniori. Mr. Papi will con- duct. The Monday night concert by the Chicago Symphony orchestra, un- der the baton of Eric DelLaMarter, will have Florence Macbeth, soprano; Mario Chamlee, tenor and Alfred Wal- lenstein, 'cellist, as soloists. The re- served seats for these concerts are free. Tuesday night, Shakespeare's im- mortal love tragedy, "Romeo and Juliet" will be given for the first time this season. Opera patrons will re- joice that Mme. Bori will sing the role of Juliet and that Mr. Tokatyan will be heard as Romeo. Leon Rothier is the Friar Laurence. Others appearing are Desire Defrere, Paolo Ananian, Louis D'Angelo, Giordano Paltrinieri, Philine Falco and Louis Derman. Mr. Has- selmans will conduct. "Martha" is billed for Wednesday night with Mario Chamlee as Lionel, Miss Macbeth as Martha, Miss Bours- kaya as Nancy, Mr. Lazzari as Plunkett Hasselmans will conduct. Children's Day Thursday The children's concert, Thursday afternoon, consisting of a specially ar- ranged program by the Chicago Sym- phony orchestra, will be followed by an entertainment staged by the stu- dents of Camp Roosevelt under the command of Capt. F. L. Beals. Ex- hibitions of boy scout work will be a feature. Children under the age of 12 years are admitted free to these con- certs and the reserved seats are free for everyone. Thursday night, the merry light opera "IElixir d'Amore", better known in this country as 'The Elixir of Love" will be given its first presentation of the season. This has long been a fa- vorite with Ravinia audiences because of its fine melodies and good fun. On this occasion Elvira de Hidalgo, color- atura soprano, will make her Ravinia debut, with Tito Schipa singing op- posite her. It will be remembered that Mr. Schipa sang this role for the first time in his career at Ravinia two sea- sons ago. Mario Basiola, Vittorio Tre- visan and Philine Falco are well cast in this opera. Mr. Papi will conduct. The beloved operatic twins, "Caval- leria Rusticana" and "Pagliacci" will be given on Friday night, bringing many of the notables ofthe company before the public on the same evening. Mme. Raisa will be heard as Santuzza in "Cavalleria", a role for which she is justly famous. Mario Chamlee will be the Turridu and Giacomo Rimini the Alfio. Ada Paggi is cast as lola. For "Pagliacci", Giovanni Martinelli will be heard as Canio in which part he swept his auditors off their feet on the occa- sion of his Ravinia debut last season. Marie Sundelius is to be the Nedda and Giuseppe Danise the Tonio, which gives him opportunity to sing the "Prologue" in his inimitable manner. Others in the cast are Desire Defrere and Gior- dano Paltrinieri. Mr. Papi will con- duct. Schipa Sings Saturday "The Barber of Seville" is scheduled for Saturday night, this time Mr. Schipa being heard as Almaviva, op- posite Mme. Hidalgo as Rosina. Mr. Rothier is to sing Dom Basilio and Mr. Trevisan will be Dr. Bartolo. Mr. Rimini is cast for the. title role and Miss Correnti for Berta. Gennaro Papi will conduct. Noted Dance Instructor in Mediterranean Lands Miss Gladys Hight, of the Gladys Hight School of Dancing, is sailing for Furope this week. She will make an extensive cruise through the Mediter- ranean, visiting Spain, Monte Carlo, Rome, Athens, Damascus, Jerusalem, Egypt, Algeria and Tunis. She will make a study of the native dances in some of these countries and return with an elaborate group of char- acter dances, which she will present at one of the loop theatres in the fall. Miss Hight will teach these dances in Wilmette on the stage of the Wom- an's club every Tuesday, beginning October 1. Miss Hight has just finished teaching the normal course at Northwestern uni- versity. Lake Bluff Orphans to Present Pageant July 4 A patriotic pageant will be given by the children ci the Lzke Blu f orphan- age, Lake Bluff, Ill, July 4, irom 2 to 3 o'clock. The Epworth leaguers of the Methodist Episcopal denomination and tne general pubnc are invited, ac- cording to an announcement made this week by Miss Jessie E. Arbuckle, su- perintendent of the Methodist Dea- coness orphanage. The pageant will include pages from American history; The landing of Columbus; The Pil- grims going to church; Daniel Boone: The Spirit of '76; Life in the South be- fore the war; The Civil war; The westward movement; "Over There"; The Goddess of Liberty. Howard Street Merchants Arrange Annual Festival Harry Holbrook and W. E. Butter- man have been named manager and chairman, respectively, of the festival committee for the festival week to be held by the Howard Street Business association, of Chicago. The festival will continue from July 6 to 11. There will be numerous forms of amusement, including street dances, parades, style shows and many other features. There will also be a merry-go-round and a Ferris wheel. Since the improvement of Howard street this festival has be- come an annual affair. Stuyvesant Butler, younger son of Mrs. Hermon B.
