WINNETKA WEEKLY TALK, SATURDAY, AUGUST 15, 1925 17 RAISA IS BUSY RAVINIA SINGER Versatile Soprano Given Im- portant Roles in Many Summer Operas IN "BUTTERFLY" ROLE "Lakme" and "Don Pas- quale" Are New Offerings With "Ballo in Mashera" being given at Ravinia during the coming week for the first time in the history of this operatic institution, and "Don Pas- quale" being restored to the repertoire after an absence of several years, an- other high spot has been reached which will add a chapter to the operatic his- tory of the Chicago district. A glance over the repertoire for the entire week is sufficient proof that the schedule ar-, ranged will make an appeal to all classes of opera patrons, Mr. Eckstein having exercised his usual care in giv- ing diversity to the program. "Ballo in Maschera" which was postponed owing to Mme. Raisa's condition after the death of her father is billed for Saturday night, August 22, while "Don Pasquale" will be the offering on Fri- day night, August 21. The new week will formally open with the concert Sunday afternoon to be given by the Chicago Symphony orchestra under the direction of Mr. Del.aMarter. Jacques Gordon will be the soloist. All seats are free for these concerts. Sunday night, "Madame Butterfly" will be presented with Rosa Raisa in the title role, a part in which her fame has gone far and wide since she first sang it at Ravinia early in the season. Mario Chamlee will be the Pinkerton, a part in which he has won much acclaim and Ina Bourskaya will be heard as Suzuki. Mario Basiola is to be Sharpless and others in the cast are Paolo Ananian, Giordano Pal- trinieri, Louis D'Angelo and Philine Falco. Gennaro Papi will conduct. The regular orchestra concert will be given on Monday night under the di- rection of Mr. Del.aMarter. Marie Sundelius, soprano and Alfred Wallen- stein, 'cellist, will be the soloists. Re- 'served seats at these concerts are free. "Lakme" Comes Tuesday * Tuesday night "Lakme" will be the offering, Elvira de Hidalgo appearing in the title role. Mme. Hidalgo has al- ready established an enviable reputa- tion in this part which gives her splen- did opportunity for coloratura singing. Tito Schipa is to sing the role of Ger- ald which holds prime position among the favorite roles of his repertoire. Leon Rothier will have the powerfully dramatic part of the father and Desire Deirere will appear as Frederick. Merle Alcock and Giordano Paltrinieri are well cast. Cthers are Margery Max- well, Philine Falco and Virgilia Grassi. Louis Hasselmans will be the conduc- tor. "Fedora" to be presented on Wed- nesday night, will again bring Rosa Raisa to the title role which she sang for the first time in her career a short time ago, and Giovanni Martinelli will be heard as Loris, in which he does some of the finest singing and acting to be found in the world of opera. Giuseppe Danise as DeSirex finds won- derful opportunity both for singing and characterization. I.eon Rothier scores effectively in a short part which he sings by courtesy, but which has an R. Others in the cast are Margery Maxwell, Paolo Ananian, Giordano Paltrinieri, Louis D'Angelo, Virgilia Grassi, Max Toft and Louis Derman. Gennaro Papi will conduct. The Children's concert and entertain- ment on Thursday afternoon will in- clude a splendid concert program by the Chicago Symphony orchestra un- der the direction of Mr. Del.aMarter, to be followed by a pantomime pre- sented by the Academy Players, which is an adaptation from the juvenile opera, "Hansel and Gretel." Children under 12 years of age are admitted free to these concerts and the reserved seats are free for everyone "L'Elisir d'Amore" which is Thursday night's operatic program, is one of the best liked of the lighter works, having a story that is replete in comedy and that ends happily. The music is es- pecially appealing. Florence Macbeth as the heroine is provided with many lilting arias as is Mario Chamlee who will be her vis-a-vis. Vittorio Trevisan will have the leading comedy role and Mario Basiola and Philine Falco are well cast. Gennaro Papi is to conduct. "Don Pasquale" Friday The revival of "Don Pasquale" on Friday night will restore to the Ravinia repertoire one of the most amusing of those works which are to be classed either as comic grand opera or grand comic opera, as one may prefer. It is by Donizetti, who on several occasions has displayed a penchant for interpret- ing fun through the medium of music.' "Don Pasquale", however, also reveals many of the qualities of romantic opera, which is relished by all patrons of music drama. Vittorio Trevisan, whose gifts as a fun maker are well known will have the title role, while the ro- mance will be carried by no less a com~ bination than Lucrezia Bori and Tito Schipa. Mme. Bori is cast as Norina, a sprightly young widow and Mr. Schipa will be heard as Ernesto, her fiance. . Both Mme. Bori and Mr. Schipa have on many occasions demon- strated their ability in those roles in which fun and romance are equally blended, and they have special oppor- tunities along these lines in "Don Pas- quale." Each of them is provided with many arias in which melody is of first consideration, and they are also called upon to do much acting of the touch- and-go sort. Giocomo Rimini and Giornado Paltrinieri are also import- antly cast in this work and Gennaro Papi will conduct. When "The Masked Ball' is present- :d on Saturday night, it will serve to present Mme. Raisa and Mr. Mar- tinelli in roles they have not sung for several years and upon the prepara- tion of which they have lavished un- usual care. This opera has many fea- tures which should prove attractive to those who hear it. Being by Verdi gives it immediate distinction, and the fact that it is one of Verdi's works which is seldom heard in this country makes it a novelty of unusual caliber. The locale is America during the early colonial days, another fact that is un- usual. In the three leading roles Mme. Raisa, Mr. Martinelli and Mr. Danise are provided with innumerable oppor- tunities for a display of those talents which have given them just claim to world fame. The action is intensely dramatic and no composer has better succeeded in putting drama into music than Giuseppe Verdi. As a result Mme. Raisa, Mr. Martinelli and Mr. Danise are called upon to do exactly the type of singing in which they excel and to couple this with histrionism that is im- pelling. Florence Macbeth will have a charming part as a boy and Ina Bour- skaya is cast in a role demanding speci- QUALITY AUTOMOBILE PAINTING and a guaranteed job WINNETKA AUTO PAINTING CO. E.
