King to have been achieved by three months of intensive field work engaging Sanitary District forces in the Skokie and Des Plaines River valleys. "Employment of scientific methods since April 1, when the campaign got under way in earnest, has had a telling effect in riding infested areas of breed- ing places and destroying countless thousands of the pest in the "wriggler" stage", Mr. King declares. "Numerous expressions commending the efforts of the district have reached our offices. These have come particu- larly from country clubs where the skeeters have constituted one of the pet peeves of golfers. "The vigorous fight against the in- sect pest also has helped along the success of the Ravinia open air opera. Before the oil spraying crews started active operations in the north, opera audiences found their pleasure alloyed with the pain of mosquito bites. Ef- fective results gained by the Sanitary district crews is said to be reflected in substantially increased attendance at the musical programs. "Under the personal direction of Ed- ward F. Moore, superintendent of maintenance and operation, a total area of approximately 75 square miles has been cleared and treated with oil spray- ing which is the main weapon against mosquito invasion. More than 30,000 gallons of specially prepared oil have been used up in this manner by the group of 30 in the Des Plaines river valley and a second of 20 covering the Skokie district. Control Work Effective "The situation is now well under con- trol, according to Mr. Moore who an- nounced, however, that this favorable condition would not involve any re- laxation of care. He proposes to keep the crews at work until at least Octo- ber, continuing the system of regular mspections of treated areas and re- peated oil spraying at intervals brief enough to insure against a recrudes- cence of the mosquito epidemic. Workers probably will remain in the field until the advent of cold weather. According to reports reaching Su- perintendent Moore, there is no repeti- tion of mosquito breeding in any place which has received attention from the oilers. These units are following a specific procedure calling for thorough applications of oil every seven to 10 days and a careful watch for any reap- pearance of breeding signs. "In the Skokie district, the territory covered extends over the 22 mile stretch from Evanston to Highland Park. The area of treatment in the Des Plaines valley covers some 50 miles. Clear Away Debris "As part of the campaign, the Des Plaines river was cleared of fallen trees, rocks and other debris acting as channel obstructions, from Twelfth street to the vicinity of the C. B. & Q. railroad and received similar treatment from Washington boulevard to Madi- son street. Tall weeds and lily pad growths along both banks were re- moved. Bad Check Man Preys on Winnetka Merchants Several worthless checks were passed on business men of the community this week by a man who obtained blank checks on a local bank from a real estate office in the village and then made them out for $5 each. They were cashed by Adams' pharmacy, the Community pharmacy and the Braun Tire shop. The checks were signed with the name I. Davison. Chief W. M. Peterson is attempting to trace the man through handwriting experts in Chicago and warns local business men to be careful about cashing checks for strangers and, in particular, not to give out blank checks to strangers who ask for them. This is the second time this summer that worthless checks have been accepted by business men of the village. "Soul" to Be Subject at Christian Science Church The lesson-sermon at the First Church of Christ, Scientist, on Sunday morning, August 9, will be "Soul." Services are held in the Masonic temple at 708 Elm street at 11 o'clock. Sunday school convenes at 9:35 o'clock and the testimonial meeting is held on Wednesday evening at 8 o'clock. Schell, owner of the chain of dry goods stores bearing his name, and president of the Winnetka Chamber of Commerce, has been appointed chairman of the pa- rade committee for Winnetka day. This celebration is being held under the aus- pices of the Cham- ber of Commerce and will be a big community picnic for all residents of Winnetka and Hubbard Woods. Mr. Schell has been busily engaged ar- ranging details of the parade, such as the line of march, the place of assem- blage, the decoration of automobiles. Any resident of the village who wishes to enter his car in the parade and dec- orate it in hopes of winning a prize may call upon Mr. Schell for advice or assistance, it was stated.
